Problem: Lower Timing belt gear "crank sprocket" has slid out about 1/4 inch from the block with the belt still on it.

no rips or tears on the belt but will replace the belt to be safe.

Check vfaq.com it tells you how to do the job, 1g timing belt its all there, lots of threads, 4 bolts on the pulley, i used a 12mm socket its easy to do.

If the sprocket is sliding off on it's own, I doubt you'll have much trouble removing it once the belt's off.

The problem you're more likely to have is torquing the center bolt when you put it back on.

When I took one off for the first time, I made the tool on the vfaq site with a drill, a grinder and an old serpentine belt tool. Worked like a charm.

edit: I type slow...

To take the crank sprocket bolt off use a SOCKET. Do not just stick the breaker bar into the bolt. To add, position the breaker bar so that it lays on the control arm or use a jack stand to support the breaker bar and crank the engine for about a second. Remember to take out the fuse that disables the ignition system before you crank the engine. Just a note, the crank rotates clockwise.

When I tightened the bolt I half assed install the old timing belt and locked the cam gears. You could also remove the oil pan and stick a piece of 2X4 in between the crank and block to prevent the crank from turning but that's a bit of work for only tightening a bolt. I'd recommend the first option that I gave.

I went to vfaq.com awsome page by the way .. so is it possible that it could be a balancer belt .. does that belt go on the crank spocket? i always thought it was the timing belt that was on the crank sprocket.

sorry to sound dumb just dont want to do this wrong or get the wrong info i am freaking out.

If you smack it lightly, it should just fall off.

The Timing belt and Balance belt are both driven by the crankshaft.

both what? the crank sprocket drives two belts but is one piece its self. it should slide off without using any puller. may need a tap or two like mentioned above.

There are 2 sprockets, 1 for the balance shaft belt, 1 for the timing belt.

Last time I installed one I just used the block of wood trick cause I had no oil pan on at the time. But I was wondering for installing it with the pan on, can you just leave the car in gear, and have someone stand on the brake pedal while you tighten it?
