Per the pics linked above, would you agree this would be the cause of my oil leak that seems to be coming from behind the harmonic balancer?

If so, Can someone give me any tips/advice on installing a new one. This one is less that 20 miles old. I just replaced the entire front case, with brand new Mitsubishi OEM parts and gaskets.

Thanks for any help,

~RyNo

That could be it. Have to pull the seal and look at the other side too. To install, just place the seal flat on the cover and tap it in a little at a time. You can also take a piece of pipe the same size of the seal and tap it in.

Yep in the second picture it looks torn at the 9 O'clock position. Gotta replace that. Pull the front cover and pop it out and pop a new one in. Preferrably an OEM mitsu one.

Since you are already in there you might want to replace the whole front cover. I think I see a few cracks as well as the torn seal.

At least look at those cracks and make sure they are only on the surface.

^Those look like casting imperfections, not cracks.

I used an old freeze plug to lightly and evenly hammer in the crank seal. When you go to install it over the crank, try putting a dab of grease on the inside of the seal so it slides on easier. I've had the inner spring/lip of the seal fold up when installing those when it catches the crank and it'll leak like a sieve.

Yeah you're probably right, they are just casting inperfections. Maybe the picture is amplifying them, but I have never seen those on any of my oil pump housings. They look Jagged and uneven, like hairline cracks. I would still give them a second look up close to be sure they are NOT going to be FUTURE leaks. I have seen front cases crack before from too much torque on the bolts.

Thanks for the Ideas, I will defiantly make sure to be extra careful when installing, and try some grease or oil for ease of installation...

As for imperfections, they are REALLY amplified by that picture, and when I saw that I immediately went and inspected them. They seem to just be imperfections and not cracks. It is weird because this is a brand new Mitsubishi case form MAPerformance, so I am surprised it is not manufactured better.

Thanks for the tips,
Ryan

Parts for these cars are deep into their service life. Most of the car companies require suppliers to be responsible for service life of parts and tooling. Casting dies have a limited life, and since Mitsu is unlikely to pay for new tooling and most suppliers can't profitably ammortize a brand new die over the sporatic life of service parts, any imperfections that do not affect operation 'slip' through.
