Planning on doing a stroker build using a 1999 split thrust 4g63 block.
I just picked up a block that the guy claimed came out of a 99 gsx. I have the head off and oil pan off. Can you tell the difference by looking at the block to verify that it has the split thrust before tearing it all of the way down? Anyone have pictures showing the difference?

The easy way is to remove the oil pick up tube, baffle plate, and remove the main bolts, then pull off the main girdle. From there, you would be able to see your thrust bearing (middle main bearing). If it is 4 pieces, it is a late 2G block. If it is 2 pieces with the thrust sections being part of the bearing, it is an early 2G block.

Here is a picture of 3 of the 4 parts of a late 2G thrust bearing for reference:

My 4G63 block is out of a 98 Talon, it has the split thrust bearing too... i heard the 7 bolt bottom ends with the split thrust bearing is a lot stronger than the other 7 bolt bearings, IDK how true this is tho

It can still happen, but it is much more likely to happen to an early 2G than a split thrust bearing late-2G version.

Thanks
Pulled the girdle and the block I bought has the two piece thrust bearing AND all bearing are completely shot - looks like it was run dry of oil. Screwed the crank also. I contacted seller and already have a refund.

time to drop back 10 yards and punt.....

I can get a 7 bolt 4g64 with a crank that needs to be turned, locally. What's the general consensus on turning a 4g64 crank - 1994 so probably not split thrust either.
