Well right now i have BC 280's in my car, along with a 2.3 engine with a SBR G50 turbo. and i don't like these cams, it seems like i was pulling better times and faster spool time at the track with stock cams. Are these 280's a bit to big for top end, higher revving and not enough low end for my setup? I'm looking into swapping these 280's out for some Crower 272's. Will these 272's be a better match with my 2.3 engine and 50 trim turbo? And will this change help me regain some low-mid range power and spool time? I'd also like to know what kind of difference there is with the Crower 272's compared with BC 272's or the HKS 272's? is there a big difference in performance, or is all the difference just the quality cam you get with each brand? Thanks in advance for any help and info.
 
Very good post I went from web 272s back to stock and gained more power. Recently I bought some brand new bc 272s and I hope they work better.
 
To the OP. The 280 cams are a little extreme for your setup, unless you are doing big boost, big turbo, and high revvs, they are a bit much. If you stepped down to a set of 272's you would be in business. :thumb:
 
What kind of rpms are you running the motor out too & looks like your still on a stock IM? I would also say the 272's are probably much better suited to your setup & should give you some good low/mid back, while probably not effecting the top end much.

Lots of guys jump on the "bigger is better" thinking, & sometimes this isn't the case. I actually know a few guys that got in on the new trend of getting huge cams (ie 280's) to find out they didn't work well with their setup & then switched back to a 272 varient & were much happier. With a 280 cam I would want to be running a SMIM, reving till atleast 8500 & have a 65+ lb/min turbo as a minimum before I even thought about running them.

One other thing, have you degreed your cams? I recently read a test that I believe was done by AMS on the evo & I believe is was both BC280 cams (intake & exhaust) that were out something like 5deg.
 
No i have not degreed my cams. maybe that is something i should look into doing though. I take my Rpm's to about 7k i shouldn't need to go any higher than that with a stroker. The reason i went with the 280's was because when i researched what cams to do in the stroker i found a lot of people saying that 280's in a stroker are just like having 272's in a 2.0, so thats what i went by.... Well I'm for sure doing the 272's then. Thanks for the Help and info guys it helped a lot, I appreciate it. Oh and the last thing i would like to know about is what kind of differences there are between each brand of 272 cams?
 
Different brands have different lift heights, different "actual" duration, some have different ramp rates, etc. Personally I would recommend looking at FP cams, they have a large selection & out of all the 272 varients out there, I would probably go with the FP2's as they focus abit more on topend vs the others, which should work well with your stroker. Now depending on your springs, you can also look at their X series. I would get in contact with them & let them know your setup & what they recommend as they may have something bigger then a 272 that won't lose the bottom/mid of your current 280's & work really well with the stroker (maybe FP3's, FP3x's, etc)
