okay, so heres the deal. I bought a head on ebay last year, finally got around to taking a look at it. all looked well without taking apart but there was an issue with shipping so i thought id pull the cams for a closer look. When I got to the #4 exhaust valve i noticed the retainer was on backwards..... i sat back, thought a minute about how someone could make such an oops and decided i better take all the valves out. all said and done everything but one valve looked good. it looked true and straight but it didnt want to come out of the guide. after i pulled the guide seal i ran a valve through all guides and were all very slick, vertually no play in any. i guess the issue must have been a valve seal catching on the one valve, dont really see how it would happen but oh well. my issue now is considering my findings if this head was built by the previous owner im not sure i trust his skills so i think i will replace the valves to be save. i dont think its necessary to go oversized with them but i want something that will hold up to all the other components. the cams, springs and retainers are 600 plus another 120 for the valve job. i have plenty of time to do this work, its only a spare motor for one of my 95's but i have a break in body work for a few weeks so i'd like to get it out of the way. anyone that can recomend a good valve i'd appreciate it. thanks {Boost}

I couldn't tell from your post, are the valves bent? If they aren't, what's wrong with them? It might be too late, but don't mix them up if you can help it, they need to go back in the same hole as they came from.

none of the valves were bent, and i did label everything in their own ziplock incase i did re-use the parts. my only reason for going with new valves was that i dont trust the seller. the upside down retainer makes me think he bent some valves and just threw some different ones in there to sell it. i guess its more of a piece of mind thing, i'd rather spend 150 for new valves then the my labor and 100 bucks on a second head gasket job. i also need to order two sets as i have a second head sitting around..... that one i keep as a trophy as its the only time ive seen a valve break and go completely through a piston. {Boost}

Even if you buy new valves you still need a valve job. I wouldn't waste the money if the old valves can be used. Just take it to a machine shop and have them check it out.

I think I'll do that, I have a block to drop off for decking and boring anyway. Thanks for all the reply's guys.
