Ok rebuilding a stock six bolt bottom end. The previous owner pulled out the 7 bolt and bought some rebuild parts for both engines.. All of these parts were put in a big box shook up and thrown in the trunk when I bought it..
I have have a new set of pistons that are ceramic coated and standard bore, i have no idea who makes them. new pins also are in the same box.
I have a set of rods that look like they are freshly cleaned. I believe they are used and from the 7 bolt but I'm not sure.

would their be any problems with using 7bolt rods with six or seven bolt pistons? should I take the parts to a machine shop to get the pins pressed in or can i do that on a big press that i have here? any way to figure out what parts i have...

If you have a 6 bolt block/crank you need to use 6 bolt rods.

You can use 7 bolt pistons on 6 bolt rods with some minor machining to the rods.

You CAN'T use 7 bolt rods on a 6 bolt crank.

Don't press the pins into the pistons/rods yourself, if you've never done it before. You definitely wouldn't want to use a shop press for a job like that.

I think you should find out what parts you have. Sell the 7 bolt parts, and buy the necessary 6 bolt parts.

Thanks GVR,

What are the differences between the six and seven bolt rods?

Are their any differences in the wrist pins, should i be wary of the pins that came with the seven bolt pistons.

What modification's to the rods will be necessary so i can warn the shop that i take them too.

7 bolt wrist pins are 22mm and 6 bolt wrist pins are 21mm.

The 7 bolt rod has a larger small end(wrist pin) and is narrower at both ends. If you try to use it on a 6 bolt crank you'd have too much side clearance.

Here's what you need to do to fit 7 bolt pistons on 6 bolt rods.

Fitting 2G pistons on 1G Rods

Found the answer to my question via search... I'll post it here in case anyone stumbles across it in the future.
