What are you guys using to grind down rings?

I want to try and avoid purchasing a piston ring grinder, so I've tried three different files with three different grits, all i seem to be doing is polishing the ring on the inside. i don't know how to gauge files so if someone knows what works please help me out. Thanks

File on a vise. Take the ring, compress both ends onto both sides of the file and work it in the right direction. What are you doing wrong here?
