I recently had some extensive repair work done which included removal and re-installation of the timing belt (which was almost new). It seems that after the repair was done, I have had a rough idling issue. The car appears to run just fine except for the poor idle. It sounds as if it may be missing occasionally at idle. One of the items I thought I would check is that the timing belt was installed correctly. I removed the top timing belt cover and briefly cranked the engine a few times in order to orient the camshaft sprockets with both dowel pins at the top and the timing mark on the left spocket one tooth from 3 o'clock position and the timing mark on the right sprocket at one tooth from 9 o'clock position. I believe this corresponds to almost top dead center for cylinder 1. Now, when I look at the crankshaft pulley, it appears that the timing mark on the pulley does NOT line up with the TDC mark on the little gauge that is used to check timing - the mark appears to be at roughly 20 degrees before TDC! Am I missing something here or has the timing belt been installed incorrectly? Would the car even run if the crankshaft position relative to the camshafts was off by 20 degrees? Thanks for any input on these stupid questions.
