I'm putting my motor back together again. Just some question. I have ACL Bearings and doing measurement for the Oil Clearence between main bearing and crank. Now the bearings I used paper towel and thinner to clean it. And had some grey stuff come off. I cleaned it till it was shinny... Should I have not done that? I was just told by one of my co-workers that I should touch it as little as possible. And just spray it with brake cleaner let it dry and install them...

Also is the oil clearence 0.0008"-.002" right or is the max .0025"?

Actually you should wash em in hot water and soap (tide's great) dry em off with high pressure air, then assemble with assembly lube or heavy oil immidiately so they are exposed to open air as little as possible to avoid rusting and contamination from debris in the air (only use motor oil if you're going to start up within days of finishing assembly, because the oil eventually drys up making the motor hard to turn over). Be careful to lube them only enough to wet the bearing surface and not the back of the bearing, keep that part dry. Acetone and a lint free paper towel, works great for drying oil residue off parts and leaving them dry quickly. Good luck!:rocks:

Oh... .002-.0025 on rods and mains sounds great!! prefer .0025" on mains if possible, but usually not too critical to go loose on street cars.

So basiclly I should take off the coating on the bearings then? So I check the FSM and it says .0008"-.002" Standard and the Limit was .004" ### i measured all to be .002" except one main which is the last one flywheel side, which was .003".

no I didn't say to remove the coating. You shouldn't. Your clearances sound as though they'll would work just fine. Gotta remember, youu will almost never get an accurate measurement of the bearing in the rod or main because the bearing itself is not perfectly round. You check your tightest tolerence usually straight up and down, and you want it to be withiinn the numbers discussed. Do you have pics of the bearings you can post?

I can later today take some pictures. But when I check the oil clearences i was running between .002"-.003" On the mains. I haven't checked the rods yet. But I decided to order new bearings to be safe.
