Hey everyone, I did some searching but couldn't find anything that would help. I wanted to give you a detailed explanation, sorry for the long post.

Last summer I had the balance shaft elimination kit done on my car. I had ordered a new crankshaft seal but I got a rear main seal instead. I couldn't wait any longer for my car to get running so I resused the old crankshaft seal. This unfortunately lead to a major oil leak that progressively got worse.

Anyway, it has been about a year and I decided to go back in there and fix it. My friend was doing most of the work and everything was going along ok. We did everything necessary to get to the crankshaft seal and replace it. This also includes taking off the oil pick up tube. We stopped here because we were losing light. I went to work the next day and he continued to work. When I got back he had the new timing belt on and the car was almost ready to crank over. After about an hour everything was put togethor and ready to crank. We unplugged the MPI plug (I think thats what its called) to prime the engine. I cranked it for a good 10 to 15 seconds and everything sounded normal. Then we plugged it in and everything was ready to go. I cranked it over this time and it made a horrible sounding "rahtatatatatata" sound coming from the bottom end. After hearing this for a little over a second I turned it off. Again we had no light so we just left it at that. The timing belt was still tight and looked normal.

What do you think is causing this noise? The engine was primed and full of oil... I didn't see the majority of the project put back togethor so I can only wonder. He is experienced and has done this many times. The only thing that I can think of is that maybe the oilpick up tube was installed backwards and its hitting the crankshaft. What do you think?

Verify that the cam timing is correct before you do any disassembly, just to eliminate the possibility that it wasn't done correctly. Other than that you'll probably just have to take it back apart and see what happened.

I appreciate the advice. Do you think we should go back into the front case? I don't see anything going wrong in there....

Ok I figured it out...

One of the sprockets was on backwards. I can't remember which one. But basically, if you hear a loud noise like that, be sure that everything went back on just as it came off.
