ok I have a 93 Tsi fwd that i just bought (auto) and the motor has rod knock really bad.....now i know it is a 7bolt block and i can get a 6bolt from a friend very cheap. So my question is this......do the 6bolt and early 1g 7bolt blocks interchange without and machining of the head bolt holes? I have searched and found mixed answers about this..........can I just swap in a 6bolt block and bolt it to my 1g 7bolt head without any modifications?

you will have to drill out/inlarge the holes in the 7bolt head for the 6bolt head bolts/studs. not really that hard. we used a drill press and had it done in about 20-30 min.

The reason it's disputed is because it is possible to put the head on without enlarging the holes. It takes some time and force but it can be done. Just bore them out.

why not just drop in the 6bolt, the head on the auto has less agressive cams!

Why not just get the 1g head now that the engine is gonna be out? Go to a salvage yard or somewhere and get a 2.0L head even off a non turbo dsm and just put your cams in...
