turbo rebuild question

i am looking at buying a blown 20g. the guy said the oil line broke and he wants to get rid of it. my question is if the turbo's shaft sezed up because of no oil is it still rebuildable or is it a worthless pile of junk

Ask to see the turbo first. I bought a 16G with 500 miles on it for $80. Shaft play like a mother, back and forth side to side. He didn't put the oil squiters back in so he lost oil pressure to the top end and starved the turbo. Sounds like you may be in the same boat. Things to check are the fins first. Make sure that they are in good condition, and that they haven't hit anything (chips or cracks). If he'll let you tear it down a bit, check for choking under the heatshield, this will be a good indicator of what kind of condition the turbo is in. If the turbo is seized I would try and put oil in it and work it side to side. If it starts to spin you should be ok. My guess is the buschings were scorched and seized on the shaft. That was the case with my turbo. It only took $112 rebuild kit from FP, and an hour of my time to rebuild it. Good luck, if you don't end up buying it let me know how much he is selling it for. Lates!
