i just baught a 99 gst with 29k on it. anyways the motor is all striped apart cuz the guy was pushing like 330HP on pump. anyways he wanted a AWD so he stirpped off all the performance parts off it and its all striped right now and i baught it cheap from him.

anyways he was telling me that in 99 they changed the bearings or did some update so its very rare that a 99 gets crankwalk. he also said only like 1 or 2 99's have ever walked. i've never heard this before. is it true or a bunch of crap?

Well I have a 97 and all the research I have done suggests that the 97's have the greatest chance of getting it:barf: The 95-96 get it a bit less and 98-99's get it the least...But they ALL get it...The best thing to do is go 6 bolt:thumb: Good luck...

but there was no big update that they put in them from preventing the 99's to get c-walk though was there? thats what he made it sound like. he said only 1 or 2 99's have ever walked, no matter what engine they put in it more than 1 or 2 would have walked. 6-bolts still have a chance of walking.

and the way i see it if they did make some update in the bearings to prevent walking in the 7 bolts everone would be buying these bearing to put in them.

There's also the simple reality that 99s are newer than the rest, and may not have gotten to "crankwalk age" if such a thing exists.

But if you worry about crankwalk, you just don't know enough about DSMs. Your fears live in the land of myths.

Most 98 and 99 don't cwalk often. Mike W at RRE compares them to a 1g 6 bolt in terms of how often they walk. The did have a large upgrade, the 3 piece thrust bearing I believe, although it's nothing I have done extensive research on, it was a major change.

As for living in the land of myth's...right...It had plenty often to make it a reality.

ENOUGH!!! I just got off another thread on CW...And to boot I had a Nightmare that I CWed last night...:barf: :barf: Hell I'm still sweating. No mas Por favor!

1995 Tsi 7 bolt: still in specs. I had a 1990 6 bolt that crankwalked by 3/8 inch endplay. Go figure. You should be fine. Make sure your clutch hydraulic system is in tip-top shape, because an out-of-adjustment system can put extra stress on the crank and bearings if its not disengaging properly. Change the oil, drive it smart, and keep it maintained and you should be fine. :thumb:

:dsm: :laser: :talon:

I have a 1999 GSX with a bit over 70k miles. I've installed an ACT 2600, an undampened underdrive pulley, a lightweight flywheel, and pulled the balance shafts. I'm a poster child for all the things you shouldn't do to a 2g because, oh horrors, you might get crankwalk.

Feh.

If I walk, I'll be glad to report back to this thread, but I'm continuing to build this car around the original 7-bolt block until I see any reason to change that approach.

Its not like that proves anything. No matter what you do, the odds are that you WONT walk. But 1 in 10 or 1 in 12 is still significant.

Hey everyone, i'm very new to DSM cars so i'm looking for some advice from people who already own them. I came accross a 97 gsx with 49k miles on it and caught my eye quickly. Upon readying into this forum i came accross crankwalk being repeated, and wanted to learn more about it. If anyone can help me and give me advice on whether not to purchase this car let me know. What should i look for when buying one, and what are the signs of crankwalk as well as others problems? Well please let me know and all ur info will be a great help thanks.

Here's something from club dsm that may be a little dated:

Mike W doesnt talk much when I'm there, its usually cory and ty telling me my days are numbered. They also know that im going 50 trim soon :p

I'm at 109,000 miles and except for a jacked up valve or 2 my motor is fine on the inside. I really don't think this has anything to do with it being a 99 either.

Defiant has said this a few times so I'm gonna say it again because its awesome. DSMs arent great cars but you can sure do great things with them. Everything has its limits so if your an idiot and dont take care your gonig to lose your motor. Most motors that have "crankwalked" that I've actually seen just had dead rod bearings and unless I'm mistaken a spun rod bearing is a tad different than crank walk.

On a stock DSM you would be correct. Add excessive clutch pressure and stress from modified hydraulic components within the clutch system and something will eventually give... The Crank is already the weak point so adding additional stress to it through a heavy pressure plate makes no sense. IMO any Pressure plate greater than a 2100= Not If it will happen, but when...:(

You people need to get off the whole crankwalk deal. Until you take your motor apart and your thrust bearings looks like this:

Then you haven't crankwalked. That happened on my 7bolt about 8200 miles ago...

Crankwalk is not that big a deal on 98-99 DSM's. The main problem with the 95-97 models is that some of the crankshafts that came from the factory weren't machined properly. This was corrected in mid 97.

Crankwalk can affect any engine (especially turbocharged) and the more mods you do, the greater risk you run of getting it. My brother's SR20DET just walked recently but he had 18 psi on it and it is modded. You aren't going to see a bunch of Nissan boys screaming "crankwalk! crankwalk!", because it happens.

No, the walking correction in mid 92 has more to do with a bearing changed then a machining change. Turbo charging really has no large effect on Cwalk, and sr20's dont do it 10% of the damn time.

What the hell are you talking about?

The change he is talking about is in mid 97 not 92...And any car can Walk...The only reason we 7 bolt DSM'ers are hallarin' Crankwalk, Crankwalk is because it happens frequently to certain years...Like I said 97's Got it the most, 95-96's Get it a bit less, and 99's get it the least.:dsm:
