Hey guys/girls, im in the process of removing my engine. my question is whether or not i can just unbolt the tranny and lift the engine out alone?
does anyone have experience w/ this?
if so, any idea how many bolts there are to unbolt?
.. and could i just lift the engine up, or would i need to move it to the side(away fr/ the tranny) and then lift the engine up?

Save yourself a headache, pull the tranny bolted to the engine. The amount of clearance that you would need to move your engine away from the tranny to clear the clutch, simply isn't there. There is a good article on how to remove your engine on Vfaq.

oh, thats exactly what i wanted to know, i thought itd be easier, 'cause it looks like the tranny and engine is not going to leave much clearance on the tranny side..
plus i didnt want to have to remove the axles-which i could use some tips on.
other than that, i did everything else on vfaq.

For removing the axles, if you don't have to fully remove them, you can remove the 2 strut bolts (17mm) then remove the sway bar end link (14 and 17?) then pull the spindel/hub down. i usually take a small pry bar (or small chisel) and put it between the axle and tranny (bottom) and gently tap it with a hammer separateing the axle since there is a C retaining clip inside on the axle shaft. you maybe able to then pull the axle out enough to clear the tranny. if not, you may need to remove the pitman arm (stearing link) then the spindle should be able to push out far enough. at least this is what i was able to do on some of the ones i've done. good luck and don't forget the PB Blast (penatrating oil)
