i was wondering if anyone has removed there power steering and left the power steering rack in?? i have a 2g and i dont think they make a manual rack. can you let me know what you did you the power rack to make it work?? and is it hard to turn all the time or just when your not moving

Without powerstearing it's just like older cars, it's harder to turn at slower speeds but above 45mph it's about the same as with powerstearing.

If you got a larger stearing wheel it would make it easier to turn at lower speeds.

No I haven't done it, but thats pretty much what you can expect when you do.

I can't say that I have a powersteering rack, minus the powersteering. I can however say that I have a manual rack. It was installed by the previous owner of my rolling chassis, who was big into road racing and wanted a more direct feel for the car. I can tell you that it sucks at low speeds. Parking is a headache and people think I'm on steroids after a month of driving it like this. :p . Seriously though, I do like the feel of it more than if I had power steering. You will learn to drive with it differently. When the car is under way it makes it much easier to steer. Whatever you do, don't go and buy a tiny aftermarket wheel if you do the manual steering swap/conversion. If you know anyone who has already done this to their car then I would highly recommend you ask if you could drive it around the block. You may hate way it feels.

My power steering pump blew up so i cut the belt to it and i drive without powersteering. It does suck at slow speeds, but you get used to it.

I don't know if they have a manual PS rack for the 2G's but I have a maunal rack on my 1G. I love it. You ask why?

1. It loses weight
2. More direct and responsive feel
3. Less belts/parts to worry about and/or replace
4. No one wants to drive my car because it has manual steering :D

Some may hate it because it's 'harder' to drive, but you get use to it and I love it. If you truely are an enthuisast, then I would recomend this... but you decide...:thumb:

If you remove power steering from a rack that is designed for power steering it is harder to turn than turning the steering wheel with a manual rack. I too am looking to do a manual conversion on my 2g and was wondering if the 1.8 liter manual rack was compatible for the 2nd gen as well as the first.

i dont see how that makes you an enthusiast? and really how much weight does it really save.

Because love hurts, duh! :) (if you love your car, your arms should hurt, hehe)

I know what he's saying though, it's more "hardcore"... you save a few pounds of weight, and have less belts and things breaking to worry about. It's just the principle of the thing :D

I want to eventualy loose my PS, i'm pretty sure it would be a good bit of work involded for the swap though. What exact parts are needed for the 1G PS to MS conversion? Manual steering Rack "what cars, any base1g's?" any other parts needed? Thanks:thumb:

The fact that you remove the PS doesn't make you an enthusiast. If you already are an enthusiast then you will understand that by removing the PS you'll have a more 'direct' feel for the road when pushing the limits of the car.

The actual weight savings is probably around 15lbs total with belts, lines and fluid. Not a lot by itself, but when adding everything together it does add up quick when reducing weight.

Not to mention it's one less pulley driven by the engine, freeing up a couple extra horsepower.

Just thought id add to this...when PS goes out on a car its harder to steer that car than it would be if it had a manual rack...it relies on that damn pump..i didnt read through this thread so im sorry if i said something already saidOMG

it will suck the first week but then week two everything will be good and you may like it or hate it, i like it because i feel that when im driving/racing i can "feel" the road more but thats just me i like it

btw-i just took out my powersteering pump and all, didnt feel any gains at all LOL
