I have a 1996 TSI AWD 5 speed and lucky me, I was one year late for the EPROM ECU. I know that a 1995 AWD 5 speed ECU would work, but they aren't exactly easy to come across. My question is; is it safe/cheaper/better to just get my ecu socketed? I cannot find an ECU anywhere so I feel like this is my only option. Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks
Sam

You need to have a EPROM ECU in order to socket anything. The non-EPROM ECU's have the code burned into the CPU instead of in an external EPROM. Socketing, is the process of unsoldering the existing EPROM from the circuit board and soldering in a socket in it's place to hold the new EPROM.

What about a FWD ECU in an AWD? I know they have a speed limiter, but I am gettting it chipped anyway and the speed limiter would be gone. Is there any other issue with using a FWD ECU? Would it even work?
