homemade octane info?

Well it was worth a try wasn't it. Anyway if anyone else is doing it I might still be hesitant to try it but if i can get some proof i can see it would be something definily worth doing considering the price of race gas octane booster.

or at least tell us what octane you can get up to with Xylene.
I use it all the time also. Toluene or xylene With 93 octane, you can generally raise the level up to about 100 octane. You basically want a 2 to 1 mix ratio. Example: I usually use 4 gal of 93 with about 1.2 gal of toluene or xylene. 5 gal of 93 with about 1.5 gal, and 6 gal of 93 with about 1.8 gal, and so forth. I will also throw in about 10 ounces of marvel mystery oil to the mix, to keep the fuel system lubricated. Fuel from gas staions already have the lubricants in them. So... to much xylene or toluene will strip your fuel system of it's lubricants. I mean a few times without doing so will not kill your car, so don't start stressing out. It's just preventative measure. The old F1 cars back in the 80's use to use toluene all the time for race fuel. These additives already come mixed in with your gas that you buy at gas stations. Your just adding more of it to "RAISE" the octane levels higher, so there for you have to make the difference up that is lost from the lubricants not being there when you add more xylene or toluene.

Ok, so lets see if this is right......... for every 1 gal of gas (92 oct). 0.3 gal of Toluene or Xylene. And 10 ounces of marvel mystery oil.

So this formula is to be added straight to the tank right? Not a bulk amount that is supposed to be divided into small bottles and added one per refill.

And ILOSE: I guess I am slow too. hehehe. No, I just wanted to check from a DSM'ers point of view.

UPDATE!!!!

I am bringing this topic back because with my newfound boost creep and no money to fix it by getting an external wastegate, I have decided I need more octane then 92 to support 20psi.

So with 0.3gal of Toluene/Xylene for every 1gal of 92 pump gas you end up with octanes of 98.6/99.5.

In addition to this 10 ounces of lubricating agent such as tranny fluid needs to be used.

But on the site linked to at the top it says something about cleaning additives such as mineral spirits, Diesel fuel or kerosene that should be used. Cleaning agents should be around 1/4 of the Toluene/Xylene added. IS THIS TRUE? WHY WAS CLEANING AGENTS NOT MENTIONED IN THE PREVIOUS POSTS?

Please help, thanks.

I myself didn't catch that either, but I don't know what in the world that you would need a cleaning agent for, because Toluene is aleady in gasoline to begin with, and if you use Marvel Mystery oil instead of tranny fluid you shouldn't have to use any type of cleaning agent. To me.. using a cleaning agent such as mineral spirits would only make matters worse when mixed with Toluene, you would strip everything in your fuel system from the lack of lubrication, that is why it's recommended to add Marvel Mystery oil to the mix. Anyways.. that is the only link that I have ever read that has suggested using a cleaning agent, and I have read some big threads about the use of Toluene over at the Turbo Regal website, Supra forums, and over at DSMTALK, and neither one of those sites has menioned anything about using a cleaning agent. They just mention to make sure that you use around 10 ounces of Marvel Mystery oil to help lubricate the fuel system. I still run the 2 to 1 mix, 4 gal of 93 octane to around 1.2 to 1.5 gal of Toluene, and have been for quite sometime now without the use of a cleaning agent, and with no problems whatsoever.

I was just thinking about this old thread yesterday and I'll be damn if it didn't just turn up again. I was wanting the link to that site but I got it now so thanks for bringing it back. I just got my new engine from slowboy. I'll be up and running soon and I plan on using those formulas to mix my feul. I hope to make some decent horsepower with my new set up and I don't trust these gas stations around here. Infact about a month ago one got busted for selling regular unleaded in the mid grade and premium pumps. I'd beat the hell out of someone if I messed up my engine because of that.

The other day i walking around in Gasoline Alley and found a gas station with regular pumps half said METHANOL, and the other ones said 116 Octane. To bad it's a private gas statation for the race teams.

That is ron rating which really doesnt make it much better than our 93 that use a r/m rating.

or if you're really cheap, mix it with mothballs. Never done it myself, but some v8 pro-drag racer told me it works. To me, this is an unreliable source. Any comments.

Seems like a lot of hassle all the time to get those chemicals and mix them at the correct amounts into your gas tank. Gotta be expensive too.

You should look into water injection (or propane injection). I use water, it has the same effect of higher octane by allowing you to increase boost while greatly reducing knock. Just dump some water into the tank and go. Simple and effective...

EDIT: you dump the water into your water tank, not gas tank

I use Xylene and mix 1 gal. of Xylene to every 3 gal. of 93pumpgas... that would put it at about 100octane
;)
