I just bought a 97 GSX but it needs a engine rebuild so I decide to get a 6 bolt engine. I've been looking at this site for a couple months and decided to build a strong engine to handle the eventual power since I need a new one any ways. I know that a 6 bolt is the way to go but how about the head, manifolds, intake and other stuff like that.

Should I port out the 1g head? How will a 2G ported head work out? what about internals? what do you suggest for rods and pistons? My eventual goal is for low 12's so I want to engine to be able to handle the amount of power needed to reach that and be reliable at the same time.

1g intake ports are almost twice the size of the 2g's...i don't think you'll need any porting to get the results you're looking for...the only thing that i would do is port match the manifold to the head and do a little work to the valve bowls...if you stick your finger in the intake right behind the vave, you'll feel a ledge that is about an 1/8 of an inch thick and goes all the way around the port...blend this into the back of the valve seat...this will create better flow and less restriction...you must be very careful because you don't want to mess up the vave seats...

Will my head and intake manifold from my 97 engine work on a 1G (6 bolt engine)? Are all the parts from the engines interchangable?

Honestly, you don't NEED a built engine, or ported head, or anyhting fancy to run low 12's with an AWD. A stock 6 bolt will hold over 400HP, which is plenty of power to run DEEP into the 12's with a 2G AWD. A stock 6 bolt, 1G head, 1G intake will all work fine, if you're on a budget.

However, if money's not an issue, and since you'll have it apart anyway... I suggest JE pistons, Eagle rods, ARP fasteners, and a Balance Shaft Eliminator kit. That's a proven, reliable setup, or you can purchase an engine, ready to race, from most of the vendors.

Can you give me some links to some places. The only place where I have seen whole engines is MachV but that is just a stock engine. How much HP can a stock rebuilt 6 bolt engine handle?
