How much cutting for an IRC I/C in 1G

I help one friend put in a Blitz front mount on his WRX this weekend. What a pain in the A*%*% it was. I took about 1 1/2 hour of carefully trimming to get the bump back on. Plus I had to sleg hammer a few things to get the dam thing to fit. Looks bad ass after we got done.
But I expected it to fit better than that.

I thinking of order an IRC race intercooler for my car. Plus there on back orber so it will take a while.
I looked at there web site and the picture were not to detailed. I wonder how much cutting does it take to get the pipeing through. plus it's a big intercooler so how much of my front bumper has to go. Can I keep my stock intake setup and AC.

I know that I have to get a thinner fan on the passenger side. which it's no big deal.
 
I have the IRC Street core. If you have access to sawzall it will make the job MUCH easier. The install isnt too bad. You need a die grinder or a dremel to clear the passageway for the IC pipes. You will also need a bit for cutting the plastic bumper. If you are keeping the AC prepare for some additional cutting from the bumping.

I am using 2 SPAL fans. If you did not rip out your AC, this is a must. With the street core, and 2 SPAL fans I can not run my AC on very hot days. Next year I will be upgrading to a Fluidyne radiator, and that will solve that problem.

Your setup is not listed, but why are you getting the race core? Just curious...

ditto i have the IRC street core also, this response is 100% correct i used the sazwall to open the passages for the i/c piping thats the only difference.;)

Reasoning that I'm looking into a race core because I'm intending to put a pretty big setup on my car.
More like a Gerrett GT 30 w/t61 compressor housing.


I might go with just a street core if it fit better.


I'm keeping this car so I'm going to the limit on it.
 
I have the IRC race core on my 92 GSX and I kept my AC. The installation required the enlarging of the two holes on either side of the radiator core with a sawz-all. That's the simple part. The bumper needs to have the entire back and bottom sides cut out. The top portion of the race core actually fits up inside the bumper. This is best done with a torch although it can be done with a sawz-all it will just take you longer and a bit more swearing.

To keep your AC the first thing you have to do is let Ken know so he can build your core with longer "legs". The longer legs are needed so you can tilt the top of the core back and push the bottom out to clear the big AC elbow at the bottom of the condenser core. The hard part comes when you try to fit the front fascia back on and you find that by moving the bottom of the core out to clear the AC you no longer have much room left for the "grill" part. I used a angle grinder to trim the fascia to fit. That takes lots of time and trial and error fitting to get right. Some guys can keep the "grill" some guys just cut it out all together. I kept mine.

For me I didn't think that was a lot of cutting. But you have to remember that when you get to the point of installing "race" parts on a car the whole idea of "bolt-on" gets a little fuzzy. Yes my ETE32 bolted onto my 1G but that was after I had to do surgery to my water pipe.

Also, if you choose to run the race core and keep your AC expect to run hot. I have the fluidyne, cut down thermostat, radiator ducting, and hood vent and I still run hot at times. Not boil-over turn the car off hot but 240-250F on really hot days.

That's what i really wanted to know form a person who has a GSX.

I guess it's going to be as bad as the WRX so I'll be prepared for it.

If you plan on getting a Gt30 with a t61 wheel you would be much better off with the race core. A t61 wheel can outflow the streetcore easy.

If you can install a front mount on a wrx you sure as heck can do it on a 1st gen dsm.
 
Agreed...I installed mine about 2 weeks ago and it really wasnt bad. I ripped out my a/c and bumper, so the only thing I had to really do was open up the hole a little bit.
 
I want to keep AC. I might take a little more work but it will be worth.
