Car makes a pinging noise

My car makes a pinging type noise when I hit the gas. Many people that I have asked about it say "oh thats just the brakes"....well my brakes are not squealing or pinging...It's not the high pitch squeal that brakes tend to make when new brake pads are in need...Like I can not even be moving and I just rev it and it makes a lil pinging or dinging type sound. It also makes this noise when im driving normally. It's not terribly bad or super loud but I hear it all the time. Could this maybe be a sensor on my exhaust trying to tell me something? This has been going on for some time. I just have a 3" Thermal catback with stock dp/cat. Any helpful suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

when was the last time you had a valve adjustment?

I am not running stock boost. I'm currently running around 14 psi on the stock fuel system. Since I have had the car (Last April @ 42k miles, currently 50k miles) I have not had a valve adjustment.

Adjustment? Valve lash is set by hydraulics in a 4G63. It COULD be lifter tick.

Pull out your spark plugs. If one of them is all messed up, fish whatever's stuck in there out.

Look for simple things first. Check your belts, make sure none are loose, or hitting something inside the engine bay. Look to make sure nothing's dangling off of the engine.

If it's not something simple, move on to the more complicated things. If you have buddies who are DSM-knowledgeable in your area, get them to look at it. Or, find a DSM/import-friendly shop (it's an oxymoron pretty much though, so good luck finding one) and have them see what they think. They might be able to find something simple making the sound that you missed, or could diagnose a bigger problem. Don't let them do something drastic though. A lot of shops will try and do that, so you pay out the nose.
