Is this enough support for new turbo?

Hi all, my stock turbo has 129k on it and is fading fast. I would like to replace it with a ball bearing turbo as I am more into acceleration than top speed at the track. I plan on buying an L1R turbo for my Talon. I DO NOT want to rebuild my 7 bolt again so I want to ask you guys if I need anything more to support my car than what I will list below?

K&N air filter
Dejon tool intake pipe
DT Lower IC S
DT Upper IC L
DT Upper IC S
1G BOV
Boost Gauge
Turbo XS boost controller
Walbro 255lph fuel pump

I plan on doing the whole exhaust later if that isn't going to be a problem. I don't really care if its not as fast with the stock exhaust I just want to make sure I don't need to upgrade the exhuast in order for it to run well.

I am really going for the bear minimum as I will only have the car for another 5 months and don't have that much time. I pretty much followed what the tuning guide says to do for 300hp, which is prolly more than I want, but just wanted to make sure I'm not missing anything so I thought I'd put it by you guys.

I would probably look into some injectors, 550's at the least and as soon as you can you need to get rid of the stock exhaust, as it is a big restriction.

buy a used stock turbo from the dsm trader. If you don't plan on keeping the car, why are you modifying it

I would for sure get some injectors. Also, it might be a good idea to get something to mannage your fuel system such as a S-AFC or an AEM DIS. If you are planning on doing more mods in the future you will probably end up buying these things anyway. Good luck. :talon: :thumb:

you will need a full turbo back exhaust, bigger injectors, some type of fuel tuning tool so u can run those bigger injectors, an adjustable fuel pressure regulator, and a good ammount of porting to run a turbo like the L1R

but even those mods there is no guarantee that u wolnt crankwalk your 7 bolt or have to rebuild it again for whatever reason, if u dont want to sink a several thousand into your car then u may as well give up the idea of getting a bigger turbo like the L1R, your not going to be able to run high boost with it without blowing the motor up unless u have the engine built
u should be looking at turbos like the small 16g that dont require alot of mods to use and make good power at lower boost levels, there is no point in buying a turbo like the L1R when u say you dont even want 300hp much less how much hp that turbo is ment to put out

Can someone translate this to the standard form of English I learned in grade school?

Thanks.

I understand what you said Cirus. The only reason I want the L1R is cause its all ball bearings. I don't know of any turbos that have ball bearings that are smaller than the L1R. I am looking for a turbo that doesn't need a lot of mods, like a front mount IC, has ball bearings, and is good for about 275hp. My Talon is not a show car or a drag racer. It is simply the car I use when I'm not on a carrier or in a diff. country. My thinking with the L1R is its big enough for the job and faster enough. I don't want a bigger than stock turbo unless it spools up faster cause I hate my cars lag.

You don't need a turbo with ball bearings. From what I can gather from your original post you don't even need a new turbo. If anything get a used 14b off the trader and bolt that up. you can easily reach your 275 hp goal (crank) with a 14b and it will wake your car up enough to have fun but still be mostly stock when you try and sell it. You did say you are selling it right?

I would just get a small 16g. They run for about 400-500 and are exactly the same as a 14b as far as looks and how they bolt up. The car should spool at 3200rpm and be able to hold 17-18psi all the way to redline with a small 16g... (I believe I'm correct on this).

Now with that being said... you also said that you dont want a front mount. Even with a small 16g I still think that I would add at the very least a supra side mount. I'm thinking that the stocker is pretty whimpy and cant keep up with anything lager than the 14b.

Also.. if you are selling the car then like the other guys said. Get a used 14b from someone for $70-$150 and then get a 3" turbo back exhaust and up the boost a bit with a bleeder ("manual boost controller"). The exhaust should help spool up and increase the hp too...

A 14b will hold 24 psi to redline on his setup (no cams) so a 16g will have no trouble ;) Well, if you dont get a larger than stock flapper. I ran 12s on a used 14b on my 2g and had a lot of fun with it for 30k miles. I also suggest the 16g route, only because you can pick up a small for 500 bucks. I borrowed one for 2 weeks and ran 12.0 on it. Its a FUN street turbo, and can still do 11s if you push it and play your cards right, even on stock 7 bolts. 550s will get the job done, but you'll need fuel control and a datalogger. Theres a bit of a learning curve there, but the info is all out there. Stick with a 190 and a fuel pressure regulator is much less necessary. Lag isnt worth talking about on 16g and smaller turbos. If its a problem, downshift ;)
