14b rebuild- some q's

Hey guys,
i am not sure what a rebuild consists off in a turbo, i currently have a 14b turbo on my car and it works pretty well, no leaks etc.

My friend just rebuild his engine and bought a full set of gaskets and such, he has a T03 on so i took all the seals for his stock turbo(92 TSI) wich is the 14b. Now that i have those what else would i need to get to rebuild the turbo?

Also what time will i be able to hit with a ported 14b, ported exh.mani full 3" turbo-back and ported o2 housing? In other words is it worth rebuilding or get a 16g?

rebuilding a 14b generally consists of...

-new shaft bearings
-new thrust bearing
-new oil seals (o-rings)
-new retaining clips

You typically need to pull the turbo apart and clean it very good. Get all the oil, coolant, dirt and coked oil off of everything. Then, polish the shaft up with some 1500grit sandpaper. Mic it and make sure it is in spec. Replace the clips and bearings and make sure that you lube everything liberally with oil.

The turbo will also need to be balanced before you slap it back together and on the car. To avoid this, you might be able to get away with scribing a line across the end of the shaft/retaining nut/compressor wheel. However, I would recomend having it balanced, just to make sure.

Rebuild kit will run you about $100-$150 and a balance will run you about $30-$50.

14b's have gone into the 11's, so IMO it is a great turbo to stick with.

And how many have gone 11's? I could count it on one hand so it doesn't say a lot. For most people it will provide lower 13 second passes if they know what the hell they are doing and have a somewhat strong stock motor. Bottom line, in the end it will cost more than the turbo is actually worth. Spend the money on a 16G, IMO the 14B is a crappy turbo to stick with, that's why a lot of us have upgraded.
 
I agree. If you have the money, step up to a 16G. Slowboy has small 16G's on sale for $499 shipped. That's pretty damn cheap.

Wrong.

There is a VERY VERY small difference between the small 16g and the 14b. The big16g, or the EvoIII16g, are better than the small, and definately worth consideration.

Even a minorly modded 1g AWD with a 14b can easily run 12's. I'm talking boost control, clutch, exhaust.

It is a great turbo.

but i'm FWD :(

I'm hoping of hitting high 13's with full supporting mods on my 14b.

Will the stock inyectors do for 15-18psi psi on a 14b?
I already have a fuel pump but no regulator.
 
Stock injectors should be able to handle up to 18 psi on pump gas, depending on the tuning and gas octane. With race gas you can lean it out more, which helps small injectors handle more boost, like 22 to 24 psi if you can tune really well.

Using 18 psi on the 14b might just get a high 13. Plan on modding and tuning it for 20 psi on racegas and you should meet your goal. Good Luck!
