i have seen quite a few engine pics with the heat shield over the exhaust manifold removed. i was just wondering what benefit this could have?

There are no benefits of removing the heat shield. Keep it on.

They're either running a different cast/tubular manifold, an external wastegate that they tapped off the stock manifold, the shield rusted off, or they're just dumb and think that by removing half a pound of metal will make their car gain mad tyte horsepower.

Heat = Enemy. That's why there's header wrap, and all those crazy things to keep exhaust heat as closed into the car as possible.

I dunno, you see anything here that looks like it might bother a plastic fan?

Geez, NICE pic of a glowing red header & turbo! That image is every reason why people should not remove the heatshield. I've thought about getting header wrap to minimize the heat emitting from the headers.

Anyone do this before?

I cant believe how fking hot the underhood temps are on a DSM, like the fires of hell!

Go check out a rotary some time.

I took the lower one off when I did my Big16G install and damn...two days afterwards I had no fan in front off the turbo..*LOL* It was just a piece of melted plastic hanign there:-( Now I made my own to protect the fan and radiator but I havent found a new blade for the fan yet...

To sum it up: Keep it on! ;-)

I took mine off and haven't noticed a difference in under-hood temps or noticed anything melting even on hot days. Of course I also coated my manifold, exhaust housing and O2 housing with high temp paint that has ceramic in it. Color burned off and left ceramic behind. See gallery

Hey Enigma Man, I have the upper shield off mine laying in my garage collecting dust. Just make me an offer. If you want I can sandblast it and paint it with high-temp paint I used on my exhaust (I'll PM you list colors if you're interested)
