Well I picked up a 92 GSX for STEAL. And now that I'm starting to work on it, I'm noticing a bunch of weird things.. For one, it's got an air-to-air oil cooler set up infront of the radiator. I thought only 90-91's had the air to air set up? It could be a very early 92, but it also has a four bolt rear w/ a 6 bolt block and big brakes.. This car was definately worked on though by a tuner because the fuel pumps been rewired, it has a UR underdrive crankpulley, and a bunch of other custom stuff I am surprised to find.. So whats the deal here, when did they stop using the air-to-air oil coolers, and if I need to replace the radiator, which one do I get.. the one for a 92 or a 91? Thanks

Sounds like you got the "gem" of DSM's. a pre-june DSM, with 4 bolt rear and 6 bolt block, and big brakes. lucky you, hang on to it and take good care of it. and when u get a new radiator, it will have 2 options to choose from usually, either 6 bolt or 7. Or you could just upgrade to a fluidyne radiator.

What is the build date of your car (its in the drivers doorjamb) I was unaware that 6 bolts came factory with the big brakes. Ive owned 2 92 6/4 cars and they both had the small brakes. One was an april 92 TSi AWD, and the other is an October 91 RS AWD. Just curious if someone swapped them or if they were really available from the factory that way.

i think the stock air to oil cooler is mounted in the fenderwell not in the front. sounds like someone added one to yours.

The car has been modded, it didnt come that way stock. The air-oil cooler only came on 90 usdm models and all jdm models. The big brakes didnt go on any production eclipse until 93 model year. The 6 bolt went out of production in 4-92 which is when all dsm's went to the 7 bolt engine. The 4 bolt rear was used in all 92 and up cars. My car has all the same but I started with a virgin 9-91 production car and added all the parts that werent stock. This could have all been found without even doing a search. It is listed in the tech/diy forum which has a direct link at the top of the page.
