I'm starting to pull out my balance shafts, and I've got into a bit of a problem here. I need to pull off the main crank timing gear, and it's being a real PAIN to get off. I know lots of people pull out their balance shafts, so it can't be totally IMPOSSIBLE.

So is there any trick to getting off that crank gear? I've tried heat, pipes, everything that I can think of, and it's really, really hard to get that one bolt for turnign the crank off.

Thanks.

As much as I'd love to do this, the engine is currently on a stand with no tranny attached to it.

Yeah. It sucks.

impact wrench?

you could always buy a cheap one. I think campbell hausfeld makes a 450 ft lb or so electric pistol-style one. always good to have around as well.

The biggest problem I was having with it is to keeping the crank itself from moving, which is what was happening when I was pulling at the little insert screw.

I do have an Impact wrench, but I just don't want it to MOVE and smack valves.

is teh tranny off? If so take two of your head bolts and put it in where the flywheel bolts up to. Stick a pipe in between and have someone hold it. Then impact it off or even use a breaker bar.

Wrap a timing belt around the pulley then around a suspension piece or axles and pull tight . The T belt will hold the pulley from rotating, then break the bolt. Might take another guy

I got it, nevermind... There was the auto tranny "4 puck" on it that I put a bolt through and had it lean on the engine block, and applied a LOT of heat.

Now I'm just having a "fun" time putting the front block off bearing, which won't go in straight. Grrrr....
