Im taking my short block to be rebuilt soon, so I figured I may as well get rid of that damn balance shift while its out. Just wanting to know does it require alot or time to do it with the kit? The shop will be doing the work but I wanna get my damn car back sometime this century. :|
Im thinking it wouldnt be much more $$$ for them to do it, with the block out of the car and all.

Balance shaft belt broke, timing belt skipped a few teeth, bent my valves and they dug into the top of all the pistons... :(

Well at least one thing good comes out of all of this...Engine with 0 miles LOL. :)

The shop needs to balance the crank and rods, so that could take a few days. Really not that hard for a group of pro's...

I basically had the same problem the guy I bought my car from broke a belt and swaped heads but he must have not changed oil because when i bought it from him the bearings were all ate up and the balancer shafts where locked up so I took the motor apart swapped bearing and took shafts out (had no choice really) put in the kit and never balanced my motor it has no vibrations or shakes either i wonder if the shafts actually did anything?

Holy run on sentence. Here on Earth we have periods, use them.

They DO NOT have to balance anything. It shouldn't be a hard procedure for a shop, as long as they have some kind of experience.

Kinda ironic i guess. Having to balance the engine, after taking the thing out that balance's the engine. Haha...Anyways....

Ive herd of people doing it with the engine in the car, And I plan on doin it soon while its in the car. Just gotta have some time and patients and a will to learn.

The balance shafts don't balance the engine. They generate vibrations that counter the normal vibration modes of a inline 4 and make the engine seem smoother.

To answer the original question, the cost of removing the balance shafts during an engine out rebuild are minor. You will need the two bearings, a plug for the front cover, the lower stub shaft, a new front cover gasket and one for the oil pickup, and a short bolt to seal the front cover where the balance shaft idler pulley was.
