Van,
Hello Everyone,

First off, if this should be in the General/ Newbie Discussion, please pardon my mistake and move it over there. Thanks!

I am seriously looking into getting a ported Big 16G, MBC, and fuelpump. My current “power” mods for my '96 TSi AWD include a K&N FIPK, upper and lower GReddy I/C pipes, GReddy BOV, chopped dump-tube, “3-inch” A’PEXi RS-Series cat-back. Potential future accessory mods for me include larger-diameter SS intake pipe, 3" downpipe and racing cat, a S-AFC and possibly FMIC and injectors. I will probably keep my boost running conservatively at 15-18 PSI to more-or-less maintain my car’s daily-driver reliability.

Now, my question is this. When I was planning on upgrading to a Big 16G, the gurus on here recommended that I go with a 190lph fuelpump (e.g. from Walbro) and not the 255lph one. In your opinion/experience, if I go with a ported Big 16G with the 34mm wastegate mod, would I be better off getting the 255lph pump or the 190lph one? If I get the 255lph one, what potential problems (if any) will I encounter? How about if I install the MBC and the fuelpump a few months before installing the ported Big 16G; will I have any idling or fuel problems? If I can, I do not want to get a fuel-pressure regulator.

Thanks for bearing with my long question. I'm looking forward to getting some informative replies! :) Thanks!!

Fred

Thanks for the reply!

Can anyone else share their expertise with me?

Thanks. :)

if u get the afc the 255 would work, u would eventually want to get a
afpr, but at idle u should be able to cut down the trims enough to get
her steady. no afc get the 190.

Thanks, paperboy! So, am I right in saying that it's "easier" if I just go with the 190lph pump? I'm after more "reliable and smooth day-to-day driving" than "all-out performance".

Thanks, guys, you've all been helpful so far! :thumb:

well I guess I could be a odd one out...I have a Big16g ported/clipped and a 255 I have no problems with idle or daily driving and this way I know that it can get enough fuel. Also I will be getting DSMlink probably over the summer so I can finally tune this thing cause it definatly runs rich.

Huh? you say you have no problems, but you definately run rich?

In the Tuning Forum I see a lot of posts asking to help solve a problem that popped up due to 255 pump/ no AFPR. Want to join them?

Please, dont even think about the 255 until you're ready to get an Adjustable Fuel Pressure Regulator. An AFPR isn't hard to tune, just get a fuel pressure gage and set it to factory spec.

No I didn't say I don't have problems did you read my post? I said I have no problems with idle or daily driving. Both of those are normal...no idle fluctuation, no sputtering, no actual problems. Idle, and light throttle egts are the same as before I got the pump. But under WOT the car does run rich in the low end and needs to be leaned out so that when I step on it, it wont lag. That is the only real problem but it in no way conflict with daily driving or idle...is that clear enough or do I need to explain it again. Also I have the high pressure pump and again no problems.

P.S. - I live in San Luis Obispo, CA where I buy 95% of my stuff from Mike at DSS (also in San Luis) and I would go with his advise, he has been racing DSM's since the the 200th car came off the assembly line in 89...thats like 14years what do i have into the dsm, 1 year.
