I have both (haynes and shop + dsm cd), and I USE both. I can reccommend just one.

Same with me I have both(Chiltons and CD). I use the chiltons cause I can have it right by the car but sometimes I need more detail so I look at the service manual.

Later,

I just use shop manuals (the BOOK kind) and get by great. Can't say I've used a Chiltons and liked it. Haynes had some straight up wrong information for some of my old cars so I don't trust them anymore. I've never had a problem with shop manuals.

I like chiltons, its cheap, gives you all the wiring, vac, codes, measurments. Most of the time I just start pulling, and put it back, but when building the motors I always refer to the book for increments+such!

I've used a factory service manual 90% of time, and back it up with Haynes/Chiltons for the actual pictures instead of diagrams.

Now that I have a few years of DSM experience, I don't need the pics, and basically only need to rely on torque specs.

Tony your house is as bad as mine (90 torn apart, a 91 parts car, and a good ol civic), fix one of those :p

I have a factory manual. It has seen hell. It's covered in oil and ripped up. I just put all the torque specs on my computer. I just print up the page for whatever I'm working on.
I really prefer the factory manual over the chiltons, it's much easier for me to find what I'm looking for.

Nick:

Yea Yea (;)) the 90 will be fixed by this weekend hopefully. Turbo ate the intake snorkel. Then I found out what 155k of Ohio weather and road salt does to stock exhaust bolts, and ran into some trouble taking off the turbo. I also found out what heat does to turbo bolts, and got to use about 10lbs of torque to break two of them in the housing.

The 96 will be done here soon, as Shootout gave me a nice kick in the ass to say f|_|ck it and start charging stuff again. I just want to NOT skimp on anything and stay fairly dedicated along the buildup. Shortblock will be the last thing to come in, and then I should be able to get her running within 3 days I'd hope. Depends how well my memory serves me after 8+ months of downtime, and alot of drunk (and whatever else) nights.

Garage is getting filled with parts, both new and old. I'm gonna have to start throwing stuff out. Silly how I never used to have anything extra for these bastards, and then last week I went looking for a CAS for a friend, found 4 of them, and a few throttle bodies. I can account for two CAS's, and one throttle body...the rest is a blank.

As per topic..I try to only touch my factory manuals with clean hands. If it's gonna get dirty, I print up the pages from DSM CD, tranny rebuild pages are great for this. BUT, I've let a ton of locals borrow my manuals and tools...and as we all know, no one takes care of YOUR stuff what so ever. Ah well, its a DSM thing I guess.

Hmm.. the place where you order the cd only accepts paypal... Anybody have the dsm cd and wanna send it to me via ftp or something? I've got plenty of games/movies/etc if you'd like to make the trade.. lmk

Could send it but it is good to support the guy who made it, he put alot of work into it. Karma could be affected (Sorry, I'm a converted Buddhist)

Yeah just looking at everyones pictures got me pissed off that I haven't finished my car. I had my time off from work approved and $900 saved up. I decided I'd keep the money and finish the car though.
As long as the drunk nights aren't the nights you're putting the eninge in you're ok ;). I know that one from personal experience. We spent four hours trying to figure out why I couldn't get my friends side and rear engine mount holes to line up. Um yeah the rear mount on a 1G can bolt onto the block two different ways

I know how that goes too, I now have three interiors, two heads, a couple trannies, and three transfer cases. I have no clue where the hell they came from.

On the subject buy the cd. Vineet put a lot of work into it and sells it for a really good price.
