Fuel Gauge?

Ok if anyone has come accross this problem please help me out. I just finished changing the fuel pump on my 1998 GSX. Everything went great but when I to start the car the fuel gauge reads have empty but the tank is full. Now my friend just did his fuel pump on his 1997 GSX and he has the exact same problem. My guess is that we messed something up in the sending unit but im not sure what to look for or where to start troubleshooting the problem. Any ideas?

When I did mine, it wouldn't read below about 1/2. I took it back apart and found that the float was hung up on something. I don't recall what now. It's been a while.
