My fellow DSM owners and car enthusiests I just want to tell everyone about a 20+hp gain from an oil change....
To make a long story short , a buddy of mine told me about "Royal Purple" sysntheitc oil...he had a 85 chevy truck and said he got amazing gains...i was a little reserved at the 5.00$ a quart price but still tried it....I have a 95 ECLIPSE RS....I was a little dissapointed when i first ran the engine, 0-60 no gain....but i hit the highway and HOLY MOLEY!! running regular oil from 90-95 takes 500 rpm, 95-100 takes another 500 rpm and so forth......with the Royal Purple i went from 90-105 and the tach moved 300rpm total!....plus i got there in a HURRY!....top speed went from 120 to at least 135(i didnt want to lose my liscence so i slowed down)...plus you dont have to change it for 6000 miles....I was at 135mph and the engine was humming a sweet hum...not struggling...well worth the money!

try it pal then tell me im wrong....what you got to lose?...25 bucks for 6000 miles worth of oil, if your even a half a$$ed mechanich 25$ for 6000 miles should be good enough to give it a try

i find it really hard to beleive that i run mobile one, the best oil on the market and now if i run royal purple my car will drop 5 seconds off its et and youll never change the oil again!!

i honestly tried really hard to not sound like a sales pitch, i even rewrote it twice.....i could not beleive my eyes when i looked at my tach, i have never run mobil 1 synthetic and yes they say its "the best", but this freekin oil kicks its a$$

Oil CAN add horsepower, but at the expense of viscosity. It's very simple. If the oil is thinner, there is less friction and windage. However, thinner oil doesn't have the same protecting properties of thicker oil. The trick is to find a happy medium. Royal Purple, Amsoil, etc. have all been around for years; it's certainley nothing new. However, the gains from oil are closer to about 3-5HP, and nowhere near 20.

Regards,

I had 130K on my car when i put a aem V2 cold air intake, tremendous gains.....this oil did the same thing as far as horse over the higher rpm range....maybe changing from standard oil to standard synthetic would give 3-5hp, but there was a much higher gain....no proof without dyno results right?....anyone who really knows how their car drives wil no doubt feel well more then a 5hp max gain...

And we appreciate the effort. Just don't over-hype things and only bring factual evidence to the table. I've learned over my tenure in the DSM Community that it's best to present some facts, and let people draw their own conclusions. When it comes to performance gains, you have to understand that a lot of things are in people's heads. For instance, you just bolted a nice shiny new exhaust on to your Honda Civic DX, and it now makes that 'oh so cool' buzz-fart noise. You get into the car, and speed off down the street like the wind. You swear since the car is so much louder, and seems so much cooler that you picked up like 25-30 horsepower! The reality is, you probably picked up somewhere along the lines of NO horsepower, and actually LOST torque. See what I'm getting at? Seat of the pants can be a very deceiving thing.

Regards,

"with the Royal Purple i went from 90-105 and the tach moved 300rpm total!....plus i got there in a HURRY!....top speed went from 120 to at least 135"

Are you saying that Royal Purple oil gives your transmission a closer ratio?!?

when you drive 1200 miles a weekend and you regularly coast at 90 miles an hour at 4k rpm, then hit 105 at 5500rpm, THEN you change your oil, do the same thing and your tach moves from 4k to 4300 instead of up to 5500 rpms, those are real numbers...not a "feeling" like you added horse....not to mention the struggle you can feel your engine is having at 105mph and 5500 rpm, then you change oil and it doesnt stress at all.....those are facts....they might not be graph charts from a dyno test but there is not a "feeling"....but i have to agree with you , i did "over-hype"....my bad, but i still will not play it down to a 3-5hp gain...it was more serious then that

I put denso iradium spark plugs in my car...that was a 3-5 hp gain..the oil was considerably more productive....

hey i also didnt realize i was arguing with "DSM's most knoweldgeable member".....its a good thing I love to argue

I hope this may not be a sales pitch, but Summit racing did a test with redline products and a Mustang and dropped close to two tenths. Water Wetter, synthetic oil, transmission and gear fluids were used. It does seem reasonable, the point is quality fluids have great benefits so use them.
But a 20 HP gain with just oil is a little far off.

I remember that test on the Mustang and I will agree that fluids will make a difference, especially if you change ALL of them to the best on the market. However, frictional losses in the drivetrain do not equate to more horsepower; they simply equate to more efficient work out of the available horsepower that's already there. 2 tenths in drag racing is a pretty big difference, but by that same token, a botched launch or a bad shift, or a cross wind can vary an ET by 2 tenths or more. Trap speed would be a better indication. All I am saying is 20HP from oil is a bit out of the question.

Regards,

and i will have to agree with you on that point...when i placed my aem V2 cold air intake on, i saw (in the tach) as big a difference as ive seen with the oil change...the intake has been dyno tested as giving 15+hp at the same rpm range as i felt the power in the oil....i made the same if not more gains from the oil as the intake at that rpm range...I beleive the conbination of running regular 10w30 generic brand oil for 130,000 miles then switching to not only synthetic, but Royal Purple oil, made a dramatic (more then 3-5) hp gain, considerably more.....but when it comes down to it, where the F are my dyno sheets?...i have none...que sera sera

by the way, i do appreciate everones input....if anyone gives it a try let me know what you think!

Points well taken, I didn't even consider those factors. The results were probably hyped up somewhat. A Dyno test keeping temperature's constant would be better idea yet.

I have used royal purple in my car and tranny and diff for 3 years now. For me it's because when I used mobil one my lifters would tick like crazy but with the same weight royal purple they don't.

I don't claim to have gained any power I just hated the noisy lifters:D

My thoughts exactly, unless he's got some kind of custom contiuously variable tranny, which I'm sure he doesn't. Engine speed to gear speed is static, it cant change. I'm alittle suprised someone else hasn't caught it.

Also I would love to see the dyno of that intake making 15+ HP. I would beleive more like 5 HP.

go to http://www.nissanperformancemag.com/august02/projectaltima/
this website shows a 2002 nissan altima getting 13+ hp...
note: this is a 2002!@!@! what do you think would happen to a 1995 with far less technological advances?
ive seen websites with more HP gains from the intake , with dyno results, but i dont feel like searching again....oh and yes 5 hp gains are made through the 4k rpm range, but after that the results are almost 10+ more HP then that.....note 2: I did not see much HP gain from the oil over the 4k rpm range, it was from 4k and up

Moegil1698:

Let me stop you right here before this thread gets out of hand. Everyone will be very skeptical that you got 20HP with out a dyno graph from before and after. 20HP is alot from just oil. We already know the royal purple, redline and such are good oils to use in the car. We are happy that your car feels much faster and if this posts encourages people to try royal purple that's great considering they shouldn't be using junk oil anyway.
