I want to know what do I need to do to rebuild a bottom end. Would I just need to get piston rings because the motor worked fine it just threw black smoke.

Well I was just asking because my car has no compresion and was wondering what would be a deasant price to pay to get it fixed. Either buy another bottom end or rebuild the one I have. Any opinions would help thanks.

I thought I only had to replace my rings, ends up the piston had a crack in it...

Rebuilding was fun though. I'd love to do it again (on someone elses car of course).

Much easier than I thought it would be. I had NO previous knowledge of dsm's and I managed to come out alive. If I ever do it again (if I'm lucky by choice, not against my will) then I know it will take me a lot less time.

me and my friends are thinking of rebuilding it ourselves but were afraid it would not work when it was put back on. How much did it cost you to rebuild it yourself. I want to know because I have an extra motor that was from a running car but want to rebuild it before I put it on my motor.

Cost all depends on exactly what you do, what parts you replace and what you replace them with.

Unless any of your friends are seasoned mechanics or you have ALOT of time on your hands and alot of hair on your head to pull out I suggest finding someone who knows what there doing to do it.

I can break it down for you....but he's right. I had a lot of time.

If you're patient, I'll be glad to walk you through it.

I kept my rods (of course) and bought new pistons and rings. Rings were $75 (someone bought them and never used them, dropped the price). Pistons were $140 from my local Mitsu dealer (dsm'ers get 10% over cost). Bearings were good (suprisingly) as well as the cylinder walls.

I did my rebuild with the engine still in the car! So kudos to me :)

Only took a few hours to do actual internal work.

Send me a PM and I'll go more in depth.

Check out part of my story...I've got the car done now

I'm in the middle of overhauling my lower end as well, It's quite easy (although I do work @ a plant w/ V-12's the size of our cars.) And as for the hair pulling, wear a hat :) . Price will vary according to what you put into it. best of luck.

YOU WERE RIGHT THE ENTERIOR WAS BAD, BUT GOD JOB IT LOOKS MUCH BETER. Well i am in the proces of takin my car to Road Race Engineering but I have an extra block I have that I just wanted to rebuild and have RRE put it in just to save money but it just depends how much road race charges me.

Get some prices from RRE. If you are willing to do it yourself to save some cash, I'll be glad to help you out (walk you through). Like I said, it's really not that bad of a job to do.

I wish I had someone there to help me (well....it was me and another non-dsm'er).

I'm kind of in the same boat. It looks like the 6bolt I'm getting for my 2g swap is going to have 145k on the bottom end. Is there anything I want to do to the bottom end so I can make it's life a little bit longer? I don't plan on anything over 350hp (I'll probably stop at 300). I'm definately on a huge time/money crunch for this so anything that requires a machine shop is probably out. I'm thinking just new rod/crank bearings, and new rings? (and tbelt and water pump, etc..) Also, can I replace the those things with the head still on the motor (like can I get the pistons in through the bottom with the new rings on?

Pistons come out the top. I don't believe there is a way around it. My suggestion, get new pistons and keep your rods. If you stick with 1g pistons, you wont have to machine the rods. Machine shops here charge $4 a press, so for around $32 you have your new pistons on your rods. They can do that in a day. I had all of my machine work done within a week (hot tanked, decked, 3 angle valve job, new seals, new pistons put on my rods). Honestly, if I had access to my car everyday (it's at my brother's house) and I had all the parts I needed, I would have been done within a few weeks.

I'd suggest getting all new belts, bearings, tensioner, etc. At that many miles, I'm sure there is a good amount of wear on them. These are done with the head on.

So should I worry about new pistons/rings? I really don't have the money to do them right now. Also - can I get all the bearings in a set? Where should I get them from?

When I was going to replace my rings, I had no choice but to replace the pistons, since 2 of them were cracked. You wont find out until you pull it apart, but just to be safe and help your engine run another few 100,000 miles, I'd get them. $33 each from our local Mitsu dealer for the pistons. DSM'ers get 10% over cost. The rings go anywhere from $75 to $120. Search dsmtrader, the classifieds here, and ebay.

Well, I'm waiting on the results of a compression test, but if they're all high should I worry about rings/pistons? I really don't want to take the head off/pistons out if I don't have to. I'm hoping I can get by with just new bearings/gaskets.
