Modded MAS problems

My car is a 91 Talon TSI. When i bought my car someone had already had the MAS out and instead of removing the small honeycomb they left it and removed the large section. they did remove the silencer on the other side which is OK. What problems does this cause by removing the large section? Will my K+N cone filter straighten the incoming air somewhat. Can i still remove the smaller section and back out a screw that is said to richen it up and allow more boost?

that's definitely not good that the large honeycomb was taken out. i'm not sure exactly what would happen from that, let one of the other guys answer that, but i know u got problems.

The Upper honeycombs should go back in. Epoxy them back in if you have to. The Karman Air Flow meter is up there and it must have straight, non-turbulent air flowing through to count vortexes properly. Your K&N will not substitute for it.

The lower honeycombs can be removed completely as this is the air bypass area of the MAS. It is common to back out that screw, port the bypass and remove the center wall. You can even remove the entire lower section if you know what you're doing and have some kind of fuel control.

It does not make the car richer, it makes it leaner as there is now MORE uncounted air going through the bypass. Your MAS has nothing to do with allowing more boost.

Since i dont have the honeycomb piece ill probally just look up the wiring and install a 2G MAS. This will fix the problem and make the car breath better anyway.

Some people have run without any honeycombs, but you better have a data logger to see what's going on to make adjustments.

I personally run without them, but I planned on losing the MAF long before I took them out anyway. :)
