well...after calling some of the turbo vendors, i decided to go with the GT cartridge. the turbo i think im settled on is the SBR-GT12 (obviously from Slowboy Racing). Of course, I was noticing that when you add up the oil lines and polishing for the bling bling, you end up with a turbo that costs $1625. The FP-3055 kit is $1720, and comes with a completely larger and better turbine housing. I could cancel the order for my o2 housing, and save some money (even if I have to have a custom downpipe made) on the total package. In which case, the FP-3055 would be cheaper. The only thing is, I got some excellent information on the the GT12 from Slowboy. I was told that the guy's "fun" car puts down 430hp at the wheels while only using an afc on a 2g mas for tuning. He also noted that he got his full 23psi by 3500-3600 rpms. WOW!!! Sounds like a great turbo.

Anyone have experience with the FP-3055 turbo from Forced Performance? I sure would like to know differences in spool up characteristics, as well as which wheel is used on the compressor side and which compressor cover they use.

I had thought about getting the exhaust manifold spacer no matter what, but what benefits would I get out of using the TSO4 compressor cover instead of the T04E on the GT12?

Just though I'd throw some Q's out there, and hopefully these will help some other people in their turbo decisions.

Do a search, I posted links to a FP 3055 review last week. I believe 390 whp with tuning issues. Spool at 4100. Looks like it might be a race turbo.

I'm still looking for better power at 22-23 lb. boost before I get a GT series turbo. The best L2R dyno I've seen was 345whp on pump. I'm watching the PTE housings too.

Slowboy said he got 430 whp. Was that on pump? What boost level?

yea, it was Mike Huml I talked to. He made 430 WHP at 23 psi!!!! Great turbo choice I think. I called him again today and I ended up ordering the GT-12. The FP-3055 is the same turbo, it just has a different turbine housing. Mike said he's come up with a few tricks for their special 7cm2 housing that will make less exhaust pressure, and it will be easier to work with since all my other parts (stainless o2, 40mm tial, 3" DP) will bolt up. The FP-30 + the FP Downpipe/O2 looking thing puts the turbo over $2k. The GT12 is the better choice, in my opinion. Plus Mike worked a deal with me....

I asked Mike about his new turbine housing for the GT-12 last month. He wouldnt talk about it though. I got the impression he wanted to use a modified Mitsubishi housing like the L2R. I want to use a Garret style hybrid like the PTE. Is this picture the special 7 cm housing you talked about or are you using a Mit?

It's about halfway down page 2.

If your getting the new casting, what do you know about it. Wastegate, similarities to the Garret or Mitsubishi, cm or A/R, etc.

the new castings arent getting to slowboy for about 2 weeks is what mike told me. he also said that they said 2 weeks ago that he would be getting them in in two weeks, so he doesnt know when they'll ACTUALLY be in. as far as the specs go, www.precisionte.com has all the new options.

mike told me he tested his turbine outlet port job as well as other misc. portings on the mitsu 7cm2 turbine housing that should make it comparable to the new casting. ill trust his judgment as he makes cars go really fast. just give him a call, he'll take the time to answer any of your questions and tell you anything you need to know. slowboy definitely has the best customer service i think ive ever experienced anywhere. give him a call, you'll be happy you did....

So it's a PTE. That's interesting, look at post #11 #29 and #33-35 on that thread that I linked. Gave me the impression that SBR casted theryre own housing. That explains alot. Good luck, I've heard only good things about them.

after dealing with them, i dont think ill go anywhere else but slowboy. oh, and the thermal coating that they do on the mitsu housings (this is a standard option, too!) makes them look like new castings. not that looks really matter, but his reworking of the mitsu housing is supposed to work really well.

im pretty sure that anyone talking of a new casting for a garrett housing with mitsu flanges is talking about the pte. mike's car proves that the mitsu housing will work just as well though, so I decided to let him work his magic on the mitsu. just my $3.50...

so get this...mike huml gives me an email and says that the tso4 housing no longer works for the "small" 56 trim compressor wheel. then he asks me if i want the gt13 for the same price as the gt12. wow, heck of a deal seeing as how he's already knocked off nearly $100!!! so i ask him "What's the difference in spool up characteristics?" and he says "about 100rpms). GEEEZZ!!!! Is that a bad-a turbo or what?!?!?! Not to mention my next questions. "So...could I get the same power at about 17-18 psi on the GT13 as I could with 21-23 psi on the GT12?"and he answered "Yes."

This just keeps getting better. Now I have a turbo that is bigger than what I started with, is more effiecient at the power range i want, and will spool at the same rpm if not less!! SLOWBOY RACING ALL THE WAY!!!

Yes, we started the casting process about 9 months ago... Here is a pic with a GT14 CHRA, and a polished ts04 cover....

92tsitalon will get the GT13 CHRA since I want to get him this turbo asap, and I have no ts04 covers available for the GT12 compressor wheel..... I only have covers cut for the GT13 CHRA and larger....

James, I will send the EVO o2 gasket as well, should match up well for your set up.

Regards

Mike Huml

see what im tellin you guys............there's a gasket.........for FREE!!!!
who else does that for their customers??? And, might I add, that is one huge turbo. Although my comp wheel wont flow as much, itll LOOK just as big....hehe.

id be willing to bet that with a 2.4 and 9.0:1 compression, you could get the SBR-GT14 to spool by 4000rpms, but mike probably has more information on that.

i should be hitting full boost by 3500-3700 rpms on my 7.8:1, 2.0l stock engine, and the GT13 so you shouldnt have a problem with the GT14. of course, tuning has a lot to do with it. if i had a built motor, i would have gone with the GT14 for sheer power output. in fact, ill probably get the GT14 after i get slowboy to build my longblock in about 6 months.
