I need to change my radiator badly and I'm considering buying a custom made aluminium radiator or a Fluidyne radiator (anyone has one for sale?). Somebody told me it would not be such a great thing to install an aluminium radiator instead of the stock one since I'm quite often caught up in the traffic. It's true that I have to be in heavy traffic, maybe 3 to 5 times a week. My friend told me that having my engine idling in the traffic would make it overheat and that aluminium radiator are mostly effective in movement condition. Should I stick with the stock one or get that custom made one or buy a brand name like Fluidyne (or any brand one could suggest that I don't know of)?? Help me out! This has to be decided this week!!! DEALINE in Monday March 17!!!

Thanks guys!:dsm:

arent the stock radiators aluminium?? aluminium has better heat transfer qualities than most other metals, just get your self some decent fans for traffic and call it good.

off topic a bit but my friend has GN with a FMIC that has ran 10.9? and is street driven he has a fluidyne radiator in his and it takes for ever to get any temp inthe motor because it cools so well.

You should be fine with the stock radiator as long as you flush it and put good fluid in it. 3-5 mins should not kill it especially as far north as canada. I ran a stock radiator down here in 100+ deg weather with no issues. I switched to the Fluidyne because it was a gift from my wife :). Fluidyne or custom radiators are not necessary unless you are heavily modded and even then there is a lot of argument as to weather or not you need it then. If you do decide to go with a fluidyne I recommend the following two places

www.mvpmotorsports.com

or

www.roadraceengineering.com

MVP is a little cheaper but roadrace seems to always have things in stock. I would definitely replace your radiator hoses though since that is more likely to go than your radiator.

ok thanks!

I have no engine mods at all yet in my car and my radiator is broken right now. I plan to modify it in the months to come. I'm not going to overdo it, but I want to forge my engine, add a bigger turbo, wastegate, FMIC and BOV, the usual DSMer stuff! My hoses seem to be in really good condition! My hoes too! :cool: I'm chillin'! Would my engine really overheat in traffic if I use an aluminium radiator? Is the answer to that question going to change when I eventually modify the engine?

I should have started a poll on this one with the following question

Canadian and American DSMers and DSMerettes! Should I go for:

--->Stock radiator?
--->Fluidyne radiator?
--->or custom made aluminium radiator?

anybody who answers gets immunity and will not be voted off the camp tonight!

I agree... I think that most peoples problems with cooling usually ends up lying somewhere else thatn the radiator. The reason I have a fluidyne is because I live in AZ where we have 110+ degree weather and with my fmic and everythign else I have it jus tworks better;)

BTW- your friends is a fuggin idiot if he thinks that aluminum radiators make you overheat in traffic. The stock rads are part aluminum, but mostly plastic. I recommend just find a used stock one in good shape for like 40$ or something:dsm:

Well im going to buy the Fluidyne, since the stock one has a long crack in the top of it.. i have some JB weld on it for the moment.. but thats gota get replaced as soon as i get a new clutch in her..

Thanks guys!

I might be able to get a custom made aluminium radiator for only a few bucks more than a new stock rad. If I can, I will take the custom aluminium one, if not, I'll just stick with a new stock one since my car has yet to be modified considerably.

How about that?
