I think that I have reached the point where I can upgrade my turbo. I just need a little help selecting the turbo that would best fit what I want. Ill list my mods and my goals and would you please give advice on what I should do?

1995 tsi FWD
brobe UICP
1g bov
hallmen ES
Tmo stage III
K&N filter Charger
3” down pipe
3” cat back
NO cat
VP o2 housing External dump
550’s on the way
S-AFC on the way
Data logger on the way

I know I need a pump and clutch I just want to know what turbo would best fit me. My goals for the car are very low 13’s or 12’s.

Thanks a lot

i went 12.9 on an unported big 16G clipped, i had 7 boost leaks and 2 exhaust leaks on that run and afte rhitting the dyno i found out i was pushing less then 250 at the wheels, i would say a 16G would get you to your goals quite nicely

I disagree with everyone here.. my reasoning...

First off you have a 2G.. if you want a 16G sized turbo just get yourself a T28 variant from one of the turbo builders out there. ie) FP or AGP

Secondly if you want 12s on FWD you are either going to have to be a very very good driver, have one hell of a suspension setup, run on slicks (possibly drag radials) or run a larger turbo.

What kind of $$ are you looking to spend?

I think that if your looking to get low 13's in a FWD that you are deffinately going to need ATLEAST. some drag radials and i wouldn't hesitate to look into getting some slicks. I think what may help you alot is if you're going to upgrade your clutch, think about getting a LSD (Limited Slip Differential) installed in your tranny. I think that once you are equiped with some decent FWD traction, a Big 16G might be enough to please you. Keeping in mind you are FWD, once that 16G spools up, you will proboblay have secondary burn outs. FWD is a lot tougher and i give props to any FWD that has ran a High 12-Low 13 because that's moving. Your car will be nice on the highway.

Thanks allot for all the help. IM looking to spend about 800.00 total on the turbo setup that includes install kit If I choose a 16g. Larry the only thing that I have herd about the t28 and FWD are bad things because the turbo spools so fast and so hard. I was going to ask you how your car performed with the t28 and how you liked it? I would like to go with a big t28 just worried about the traction issue. I dont plan on racing at the track to much but I will buy a set of slicks! me and my buddy are going to go in on them.

Just get a used 14b and then port it. That will get to your goals if you can drive and if you run race gas/18-20 psi.

Yes the T28 spools a few hundred RPMs faster so its possible you may spin with it and not the 16G but IMHO your going to spin with either of them. If you have the right setup of sticky tires then having the power come on faster could only be a good thing.

I ran a 13.7 @ 109 with my Big28 with a 2.4 60ft time. If I managed a better launch or had been on drag radials Im sure I could have pulled off a low 13.

get a good clutch, something with at least 2 friction plates, lsd, and either of those turbo set-ups should be able to make your heart skip a beat or to. Also get the polyurethane motor mounts, they will help a little with the traction.

Well, here is the problem with T28 (big or otherwise). Some people are able to run mid 12's or even low 12's with them, but the vast majority of people with those turbo seem to be running in the 13's.

Fast 16Gs in 2G's are much more common. I would recommend it over the T28...

Seriously though Leon, the Big28 series turbo has been putting down around 300whp, the same as a 16G setup so there is no reason for either to outrun the other. The only reason you see alot of good times with 16G owners is because that turbo has been around and is installed on ALOT more DSMs then the T28 is. Personally I think the DSM should have come with the T28 from the factory. The car drives like stock but pulls 10x harder.

Well, I am not as used to dyno numbers as in the past DMSers rellied more on ET and trap speed for power indication (mostly trap speed). Big and small 16Gs have ran in the 114-117mph range on 2G cars. I do not recall seeing anywhere near as many BigT28s doing that... As a matter of fact, other than Loren, I am not sure if there is anyone else running 11’s or above 112-113mph on that turbo.

Some of it must be due to what you have already stated, a small sample size. But having driven a few BigT28 I am not impressed. I think that the claims of them being just as powerful (if not more powerful) than a 16G seem to be embellished to me...

I consider power made on the dyno a very good way of choosing a turbo, trap speeds and ets relie way to much on other factors like location and driver.

I dont know of many 16Gs trapping above 110 either. Maybe its just my area though.. who knows.

Larry,

Of course dynos are the best indicators of power, but if I had to guess I would say that around 50% of DSM enthusiasts have visited a drag strip, where as, less than 5% had any dyno time. So trap speed method still offers best sample.

>I dont know of many 16Gs trapping above 110 either. Maybe its just my area though..

Well, in my area, typical 16G’s run 108-112mph, typical T28 (big or small) are in the 104-106mph range. Which is still better than a T25 but not up to par to a 16G. If I had to equate it to something, I would say that it is closer to a 14B (which is not a bad thing, ether :) )

I'm not so sure if a 14b is what the doctor ordered for a FWD. The 14b builds boost VERY quickly. Almost as quickly as the T-25. It's a lot more linear and smooth on the 2G, but it's still going to contribute to wheelspin, and hurt 60 foot times. I think a big 16G with a 2G install kit would do very well in the quarter, but the 14b would be ONE HELL OF A BUDGET INSTALL, and would absolutely rip on the highway, or anywhere where you need up to 21LBS of boost very quickly.

i'm about to have the same mods as twitch soon as i get my stupid clutch in. and i was kind of debating between the two turbo's, why the heck are the t-28's more exspensive?? even with a good core trade in?? I'm kind of likeing the "big t28 killer"

If you want cheap go the 14b route
$100 for used 14B.
$25 in parts to put it in.

I don't think that would be what he wants with his fwd though, I would go with something larger.

Twitch--have you considered an 18G?

No I have not considered a 18G I think im going to go with the t28 I just have to find a good deal on one. I really like the fact of the fast install and how easy it is to bolt up, the only downside is the wheels spin but I think I can live with that. I really want my car to be a highway beast!!
