I have looked all over for information on converting my big 16 to a 20. I plan on doing this myself, but cant seem to find the info. I've checked many other places, so I hope I'm not out of line for posting here. before you tell me to find a shop to do it, I'm an ASE cerified master engine builder and a machinist. I build performance engines for a living. I'm not new to performance just DSM. I got bit hard by the DSM bug. With that out of the way, I need to pick your collective brains on part numbers and differences on the 20g conversion. Which is better a 06 or 05 housing. I see buscher uses an 05, but wouldnt a 06 flow more? Pardon my ignorance about turbos my last project was a friend of mine's 8 sec 413 cid alcohol corvette. ~ Thanks Dave

Or since you are a do-it yourselfer, check out turbochargers.com and turbonetics.com They should be able to get you the parts. You'll need the 20G compressor wheel, TDO6 compressor housing, and hopefully your 16G already has a 7 cm exhaust housing. There may be other small parts to fit the wheel on the center cartridge, but the vendors can help you there.

They aren't referring to the housing, they're referring to the turbine wheel. BR uses a TD05 wheel, same as a 16G. Other companies use a TD06 wheel. As to which is better , use the TD05 becasue you already have on on your 16G....The turbo will have to be balanced after you do this.

HRC has the cheapest conversion kit i've seen - $299.

All you need to convert from big 16g to 20g is the 20g compressor wheel (mitsu part # 49179-43400) and the TD06 compressor housing (can't find the mitsu # right now...)

The problem is, I could never find anyone who would sell mitsu pieces seperately, I tried all the turbo rebuild places, Mitsu dealerships, vendors...

Thanks for your help guys. I think when I'm done with my stroker motor this turbo will be just fine, but you know how it goes BIGGER, BETTER,FASTER,MORE. Just one more question while I've got you all here how many cfm's does a 2g mas flow and what are its restrictions. I've talked to Pro-M and they have a mas in development. To bad TRE stopped making theirs. I'm not really sold on the VPC cause of the funny idle characteristics of a map in a highly modified engine. Besides I dont like useing stuff thats out of production. I know that Buscher really pushes it, but that doesnt mean its the only way to approach the problem of metered air flow without a stand alone. Thoughts and comments would be appreciated. Thanks ~Dave

The 20g flows 650cfms.

I would highly suggest doing the 2g mas conversion. Much cheaper alternative.

Yes the 2g mas should be fine. Low 11 second timeslips have been achieved on the unhacked 2g mas.

They aren't referring to the housing, they're referring to the turbine wheel

just if any of you guys are confused.... the housing would be the tdo5h. and the wheel is the 16g. 16g is what they call the compressor wheel. what marshall said is correct. but you will still want the turbo to be balanced before you finish things up. thats why most shops want you to send your turbo to them, because, they balance it for you so everything is perfect.

Now things are starting to get fuzzy. I've seen 20g turbos in the TDO5H-20G and the TDO6-20G ,so if the 20G references the compressor wheel what does the tdo5h and td06 mean? Does it have to do with the housing or the turbine wheel? Sorry for being so thick headed but I'm not getting it. Thanks dave

Opps I guess i should of read a couple of posts up that question has already been answered. Thanks for the help.

no problemo. yeah you will see turbos like that. also with the 18g. some come with the tdo5h housing (at least a couple of my friends with civics that have 18g's have those) and some will come with a tdo6h housing.

The unit that Ramchargers are working on is sounding very attractive; 3 or 3.5" hotwire MAF, direct bolt/plug-up.

See other threads here for details, pricing, etc.

It has to be balanced after installing 20G comp wheel? For just compressor housing swapout using B16G turbo ,no balancing? Is that like half a$$?Or,does it work just as good.?Just alittle less CFM I would assume. Not to be funny or anything

If you dont have it balanced, the thing would probably come apart after the first time you boosted it. Nevermind the fact it wouldnt spin to easily if it was all out of balance, compressor surge would probably follow it too. I thought the difference in the td05/6 was the center cartridge. The 6 has a stronger thrust bearing, which is better life expectancy with a bigger turbo. I have been thinking about having my big 16g turned into a 20g as well.

Well just to let everyone know the td05/6 is referring to the TURBIN WHEEL... Not the center section (same) or the compressor...

just to let you know I've talked to a local turbo shop and he says some machining of the cartrage housing is necessary to install a 20g compressor wheel in a big 16g. Due to the increased diameter of the 20g wheel. I can get the conversion kit from a local shop for 275.00 and he'll balance it for 20.00. I'll do the machining myself. Its nice having access to a lathe.

Machining is only required if you are planning on using the tdo5 compressor housign(the comp housign used with the 16G) If you are going to use the larger tdo6 comp housing, native to the 20G, no machining is required. Besides the comp housing, and comp wheel, a 20G, 18G, 16G, & 14B all use hte same parts. Same center section, thrust bearing, sleave bearings, and trbine wheel(although some 20Gs come with a tdo6 turbine wheel, appropreately named: the tdo6-20G)

Thank you. The fog is clearing now.

God, I can't wait for my TDO6 20G conv....I'm getting a mean "fuzzy" just thinkin about it LOL. :p

I did the TDO5-16G to 20G conversion last spring, I bought the kit from Hahn racecraft. All I had to do was get the centersection machined and I put it together I never got it balanced and it works fine I have put over 12,000 miles on it and I run about 18-20 psi.
