Can you counter knock with a DSMlink??

I was just kinda thinking about this tonight... I dont have a DSMlink, but if I am correct, you can advance the timing with it according to RPMs... well...if you see that you always get a high knock count at say 4500 RPMs and your ECU retards your timing say... 5 degrees... couldnt you just bump up the timing at 4500 5 degrees? I mean... you really arent getting rid of the knock, but if you are pretty sure that it is phantom knock, would this work? or would your ecu see that and continue to retard the timing beyond what your settings are? Like I said, I dont even have a DSMlink (yet), but this is just something that I have been thinking about..... any ideas? Thanx--

You can advance timing with the DSM Link, but if the ECU is seeing Knock of any kind(the ecu cannot distinguish real from phantom knock), it will continue to retard nomatter how much you advance it. The only way to get rid of it, is to disconnect the knock sensor. "note" this is very dangerous, and should only be done if you exactly what you and your engine are doing.

best way to combat knock is to run high octane gas, use a s-afc or something that you can adjust your fuel w/ and make sure your intercooler is clean and getting enough airflow to keep intake temps down. well that's my opion at least but i'm certainly no expert. :dsm: :thumb:

what he said, and I think that is the one downfall of the DSMlink, the fact that since it retains the stock ECU you are made to deal with the knock be it phantom or not with minimal control.

Well wouldnt a stand alone still pick up phantom knock? If the stock ecu is picking it up, why would a stand alone not? the main ways to get rid of knock is to add more fuel. Run higher octane, and reduce timming. Both the timming, and the fuel can be changed with the DSMlink. It's up to you to put the good gas, or race fuel in. So yes you can get rid of kncok with it.

But back to phanton knock. Lets say the lifters are nosiey, and trickering the knock sensor on the stock ecu. Would it not also trigger a standalone? you use the same knock sensor. Well the AEm use's it.

difference between a standalone and the DSMlink is with a standalone yes it will see knock but it doesnt retard timing because of it, it expects you to either make the knock go away or you to control the timing.

Better yet... why not just "fix" the knock problem???

Better/more fuel, less boost, less timing, lower intake charge temps, clean the carbon out.

if it was that simple then knock wouldn't be a problem. not everyone can afford race gas to run in their car all the time. its about flexability.

Rubbersidedown, knock isn't a problem. If you have too much, you're running too much boost. Race gas isn't needed. He is talking about phantom knock anyway.

About disconnecting the knock sensor, or otherwise "fooling" the ecu, that's the wrong fix for the problem. There are fixes for phantom knock, and you should do those instead of resorting to other measures. The knock sensor is a safety mechanism.

i know i know. we're getting to general in our discussion. but knock does become a problem when you want to run more boost. and i'm pretty sure that he'll eventually want to turn his boost up at some point or another. everyone does :thumb: so its good to talk about possible remedies. On top of that you haven't helped at all either. You say there are remedies for phantom knock but you list none. You just came to tell us how we're all wrong. although i'm pretty sure everyone understands that disconneting the knock sensor is a bad idea. :dsm:

A standalone won't just overlook knock and give you complete control of timing unless you disable that feature. I know the Proefi and assume the EMS has some form of knock noise table where the unit only considers noise above a certain threshold to be knock, and thus pull timing and add fuel.
