ok my car runs like well sh*t i've been told it could be many things one of them to be the egr could be bad, whats the point of blocking off the egr? ive been told it will make your car run worse from someone who said they block it then unblocked it and with it blocked they would get bad knock counts and with it unblocked it wouldnt get any knock. so is blocking the egr good or bad?

I have an EGR block off now. Seems to run fine. I will have link next week so I will pull logs and see what kind of knock that im getting. Im more worried how bad the motor vibrates from the poly motor mounts causing knock than EGR block off.

i also have the poly mounts and am not seeing any knock, but before i hooked the egr up again i was seeing lots in 1st and 2nd like he is. but my car is also stock

well by having the poly mounts I was worried about Phantom knock. I dont see how having exhaust gases recurcit thru the intake under light load and idle would hurt performance. I want to know about these guys that autocross their cars and 10 second cars if they have them or not.

from what ive read, and experienced the egr is only in use under "normal" driving conditions but inactive under "spirited" driving. so therefore not having it on a 10 second car wouudnt make much of a difference unless trying to drive it part throttle. basically since my car is stock i need it, if i had some sort of ems i wouldnt

If your egr valve is bad, it could cause a boost leak from your intake manifold to your exhaust manifold. This would cause terrible drivability. You don't ever NEED an EGR valve working, unless you have a CA car and don't want a meaningless CEL. But if you do do away with the function of the egr, you must seal it off properly.

car is a Ca car but doesnt have a Ca ecu anymore. my brother said my egr is probably bad, i mean its most likey the stock one from 91 and many people have told me its probably a boost leak why i get knock

mine had been disconnected but not removed by the previous owner among other dumb things like venting the BOV. after i hooked it back up the car is running better than it ever has for me

so you think that may be my problem?

i would say since we are having the pretty much identical problem its a good possiblity. i got lucky in hookin mine back up and its still good. but if yours isnt i guess if its not gonna hurt anything might as well block it off instead of buying a new one

ok ordered the block off plate today, lets see if it makes a differnce when i put it on

this might be stupid but do i need a gasket for the blcok of plate? becuase you would think they would sell on for it when you buy the plate but i didnt see any at extremepsi or jmfab(where i got my block off plate)

i put it on the manifold and the plate. then put the first bolt through the front of the plate through the gasket and turned it into the manifold then i did the bottom. Tightened so the lock washer flatened almost all the way. waited a few hours and came back and finished tightening.

I know this is an old thread but better than starting a new one....since I was using the "search" feature anyway.

Anyway, just crossed my mind but what would happen if the egr valve was still bolted to the manifold, but the vacuum lines were removed? Wouldn't it stay shut and act just the same as installing a blockoff plate? Just thought I'd ask. For no particular reason :D

I would have to say it depends if the EGR is good or bad. Wouldn't a bad EGR be stuck open allowing free flow of air? So if it was closed I wouldn't see why not. Removing it would just allow you to clean up unused parts.

it would make a big boost leak.

Where and how? Not trying to be a smart butt. Just wondering cause I've never really done much research on egr's to be honest. Wouldn't it matter if it's open or closed?

The egr valve is a valve that opens based on vacuum, much like a bypass/blowoff valve. If there is gunk buildup in the valve, it will never close. And i suppose it IS possible to run enough boost to overcome the spring pressure at the diaphragm if there is not boost reference helping the valve stay closed. If yours is functioning properly, leave the vacuum/boost reference attached to assist in sealing during boost, or blockoff. If it is gummed up (and cant be cleaned well enough) or the diphragm is damaged, replace or blockoff.

Eh, I just went ahead and made a plate for mine. Just installed it. No more worries now.
