for some reason, i completly forgot how to time my car, or any other 4g63 after an accident.. the only thing i cant remember and its one of the most important soo bear with me please. soo here is my problem, everytime i put the belt on, i do the vfaq way of setting the exhaust cam gear off one tooth clockwise, and then when i simulate tension on the belt, its perfectly in time, but for some reason when i turn the crank, the belt skips. the right side of the timing belt dosnt seem to move at all. what am i missing? what am i doing wrong? serious help needed.

You actually have to pull a little tension (toward the firewall) on the exhaust cam gear when installing the belt in order to get everything to line up properly when it's all said and done.

What other step are you unsure of?

like i said, i went braindead and forgot the steps of what to do, i tried reading off of the vfaq, but theres about a thousand specialty mitsubishi tools i need, that i dont have. but i guess i will try and do what you said.

I am not sure if you already saw this:

It is pretty good and may help.

All this is mentioned elswhere, but modified needle nose plyers work for the tensioner tool. I made one by match drilling holes through the old pulley into a piece of bar and then tacking nails in the holes as drive ears. The battery hold down rod can be chased to serve as the other special tool.

....theres about a thousand specialty mitsubishi tools i need, that i dont have.
My first handful of timing belt jobs were done without any of the special tools. I used a battery bolt to compress the tensioner, and preloaded the eccentric on the tensioner pulley with a prybar until the measurement at the auto-tensioner was perfect.

I've since invested in a set of the necessary tools from Jay Racing (Tools : Jay Racing) and they've paid for themselves quickly in the time they've saved me. Other than those two tools, I don't really use any other "specialty" tools when working on DSM's.

yea i know what you mean, i was reading everythign i didnt have any of the tools and i still timed my car just right :D

i just got my timing belt done (with new tensioner and water pump and pulleys). The bottom pulley was too big (the lip) so the mechanic put on the old one and the new pulley on the top worked fine. I worked the belt in for 120km, but now when i go WOT, the engine sounds ALOT louder (rougher) and i hear a ticking noise (in high RPM's). The timing obviously works bc the engine didn't grenade. i talked to the mechanic and he said to ask about timing after installing the belt (retardation or w.e), etc. Please help!
