I want to do a turbo back exhaust myself. Has anyone fabricated exhaust from premade mandrel piping? How many and which bends are needed? Any info on how to do this or your setup would be a big help. Are there any instructions out there? Thanks for your help...Matt

I believe rre sells the mandrel bends you need. You'd pretty much need their 72* bend for the dp, two 5' straight pipes, and probably a U bend for angles. Don't forget flanges and gaskets.

I'm not sure if the 2g FWDs are the same as the 1gs, but doesn't your exhaust go over the rear axle? I tried making one for my old Talon and it was such a bear to get the angles right to get over that axle. I eventually gave up, sold the car and got an AWD. IMO I would build most of the system yourself and just buy a cheap axle back. I've seen them on ebay for your car for about the price of a muffler. You could probably build everything back to the axle for about 150-200 (including flex section 40 and universal cat 60.)

-I use the DYI pipe from Road///Race. I vent mine exhaust under the car before the left rear tire, with a hollowed OEM style muffer in the back, single 1" tip. Sometime I switch to my Apex N1 cat-back.

*One O2 housing to DP flang with gasket.
*One DP 1st bend 2.5" stainless.
*One 2.5" mesh flex section.
*One 3" pipe at ~15deg bend to clear the X'fer case, you might be able to use straight pipe instead.
*One 3" cat (I weld to cat to the above pipe to save $ on flangs).
*One set of 3" flang with gasket, the 2 bolt type is thicker than the 3 bolt flang.
*One 18" resonator.
*One 3" 90deg bend.
*One 12" resonator.
*About 3 ft of 3" pipe.
*5 pipe hanging hooks.

-Weld together in that order, I use clear packing tape to joint the pieces together so I can see the joint, the tape will melt away slowly as you start to weld, take your time to match the seam of the joint to advoid burn through, disconnect the ground on the battery b4 welding, this was done with a small Lincoln wire feed welder. Good luck.

You can actually make your downpipe out of a ubend and have it be an 02 eliminator which is FAR pregferable to sopme shitty cast o2 housing...and get an 02 sensor bugn and turbo outlet flange.

can you explain what you said one more time. I really dont understand what u mean when u said to get a turbo outlet flange and O2 sensor bugn. A little more detail would help, thanks alot.

turboholic-do you use another muffler under your car or do you just use the two resonators to quiet it down? Is the exhaust note deep and loud or is it annoying and abnoxiously loud? I have @sshole cops in my area, so it cant be too loud.

How long did the homemade exhaust take to fabricate and make? Any difficulties or hours of work wouold be great.

Thanks alot everyone, Matt

-I was going to use a round Dynomax muffler, but only leave me 2" of ground clearance, now I have about 4", your FWD has much room than my AWD, the 2 resonators are louder than the N1, but with a much solid sound, those resonators do come in different length, the fake muffler in the back will throw cop/people off, I have driven/stop next to police a few time, no problem yet.
-It took me 2 weekends to do the turbo back, about 8 hours to finish, but I took it off a few times to get it the way I want.

-No, but you can make one out of a 180deg "U" bend. There's no much noticeable gain by using a 3" 1st bend instead of a 2.5", beside, unless you're making a O2 eliminator DP, you can't weld a 3" pipe on to a O2 housing/DP flang.
