I installed my oil cooler with both lines/fittings facing down (fittings vertical).

After looking at most of the post on this site i notice that most installs have the oil cooler mounted with the fittings horizontal.

Will this cause any problems, should I change the position of my cooler?

Ok, good.

Does any one else have an opinion on this just so others will know it is ok to mount the oil cooler this way.

What did you use for your lines? I've been thinking about setting up an oil cooler and wondered about using hose instead of ss braided lines. Could you post some pictures of your setup so I could reference? Thanks, big_d

yeah i can do that...

if you search "Oil Cooler" there are already a few threads with install images

Yeah, I've looked at most all of them... I am trying to do this a cheap as possible so I thought I would use a sandwich adapter with rubber hose and some sort of cooler. I replaced my oil filter housing with a frontal facing one because I wasn't even thinking about the oil cooler, so that leaves me with using a sandwich adapter. big_d

^^Ditto. Did you mount yours in front of the radiator or on the driver's side where the windshield washer fluid bottle is/was? I've been wondering which location is better overall and why Mitsubishi chose to mount the factory oil cooler where they did. Considering the length of the lines and everything.

i mounted mine on the drivers side front fenderwell area and positioned it so it gets a lot of air flow... didn't want to put in front of the radiator because i will be installing a front mount...

That's where i put mine and it stay nice and cool

Big_d, one way to build a nice budget OC is how i set mine up, i'll explain.

I got an oil cooler from a Dodge truck at a bone yard with 5/16ths hard lines coming from it. I had my Oil filter housing tapped for AN fittings and then usedsome standard braided lines with comrpession fittings on the ends that go to the ooler and AN fittings at the filter housing. I cut the factory coulplers off the dodge cooler and used teh comrpession fittings to adapt it over. One of the compression fittings came loose once nad i lost a good bit of oil, but made it to the next gas station for some more oil, after snugging them back up with a pair of cresent wreches.

If you'd like pics let me know and i;ll post a few up. Altogether the setup cost me right at 50 bucks. 30 of that being fittings for the braided lines. I spent nothing on the oil cooler since i use to work at the bone yard i got it from. the rest was for some seals, bolts and other misc. stuff i needed.

Here's some pics anyway, since i snapped them just in case

Here you can see the cooler through the left side air passage in teh bumper cover.. You can see part of teh line connection in this pics as well

I did a little different install. I used a factory 90 cooler, mounted it on the left side with theaded holes left of the core support frame. I used the banjo bolt with welded JIC fittings.I ran the hoses thu the same hole of the a/c line. I have photos in my gallery.

I found my origional oil cooler in my 90 corroded so I used a tube and fin Hayden oil cooler to replace. I picked the left side behind the driving lights for a mount area to allow for the front mount.

I was reading up on this and I saw this on one site:

As far as considerations for mounting the cooler, you MUST mount your cooler so that at least one of your ports is "up". This prevents air being trapped in the cooler and hurting it's efficiency. Both ports "up" is great. So is mounting it sideways with one port "up". Both ports down is BAD because of trapped air. (that tidbit courtesy of NABR).

Ideally you want the cooler mounted with the the input and output on the top and bottom, so horizontally.

Ideally you want the hot oil to be pushed up and through the cooler, and come out cooler on the top of the cooler.

mine is also mounted with both ports at bottom... and i have been driving it with no issues for a while now...

i am working on a T3/T4 turbo system this winter and i would rather fix it while i have the whole car taken apart if it may cause and issue down the road...

No problem guys, thats what I'm here for.

Anyways here a few pics of my cooler setup. If you look at my lines closely, you can tell that the outer port pushes oil up the cooler.
