My 98 TSi has no mufflers. It does however have 1 large, and 1 VERY small resonator. I was just looking at hellcat77's car (98 AWD) and it has a muffler!! What the hell is going on here? Do the AWD cars have a muffler because they can't fit the resonators?

Is there any perticular reason there isn't a single aftermarket exhaust system that has resonators instead of mufflers? Is it possible to have 3" piping without sounding like a pissed off bumble bee?

I am also having trouble finding a downpipe that is a TRUE 3". I am looking for a 3" flange at the turbo, 3" flex pipe, and a 3" cat. Is there such a company that makes one? I had a look on ebay.. .those parts made me cry. If you are lucky it is a 3" pipe, but they use neckdowns fo for the flexpipe and cat!!

"Is there any perticular reason there isn't a single aftermarket exhaust system that has resonators instead of mufflers? "

Yeah, because it wouldnt sell.

"Is it possible to have 3" piping without sounding like a pissed off bumble bee?"

Every 3" Catback Exh. Ive heard on a DSM is low pitched till boost (then sound varies), but Ive heard no bumble bee/high pitched B-series Honda sounds from any of them.

I BELIEVE the Apex N1 Down pipe is 3" all the way through. BUT it eliminates the cat. I plan on going with it, BUT it MAY be 2½" till the flex when it turns to 3", if not, then 3" all the way through.

Thanks for the info Dieselboy.

Could you explain the "wouldn't sell" comment? I asssume you are refering to the fact that most people are after the big tipped stainless muffler look?

The reason I am asking about the catback is because I don't want some huge goofy muffler out back. My plan is to have a good resonator or two under the car and then have stock appearing tips. They will just be a little bigger.

Correct. I dont know how it would sound without a muffler back there. Definitly no the same as some kind of canister back there. If you want something clean and fairly stock looking, try looking at the GReddy SP exhaust. Its a single tip, yet is pretty stock looking.

BTW: I have seen people run a stock looking dual-tip exh., so you may want to ask around about that if your really set on the stock look.

an interesting note: the new neon srt-4 is reportedly going to be mufflerless with just resonators in its dual exhaust (to go along with the 16G @ 14 psi and FACTORY fmic).
