Richmond Hill,
Now are there any mods I can make for $50 or less? Of course this would be with my own labor. I am looking for something that would give an increase in speed. Is there anything?

Unless you want to mess with tuning issues, don’t do the honeycomb mod on your MASS Air. I use to have this mod, and it was a pain in the rear trying to get the car tuned on race gas. Since I pulled the honeycombs, the MASS Air was reading the wrong settings, and I had to over compensate on the AFC to make it work. Took me a LONG LONG time to find someone with some extra Honeycombs to replace the ones I tossed.

All the other free mods, such as the boost nipple, the BOV tube, etc are well worth the time. Also do get some colder spark plugs, BPR7ES are what I run, you might not need some that cold, but I have the MSD-DIS 2 and they work great with the spark it produces. Also get some good spark plug wires, I run with the NGK, I have had the Magnacores, but found the NGK's to just be better in design and toughness.

Hope this helps you some,

But what you don’t see is the extra $20 bucks for shipping! LOL. I thought I was getting a smoking deal on my front strut bar for $24.95, then I check out, fill out all my information and find out they want $25 for shipping.. OUCH. If I had known that, I would have bought a few other things.

Dang I did'nt even notice he had a 1G, the free mods are pretty much the same though. Remove the silencer, plugs, wires, tune-up stuff like that.

das about all I can think of off top of my head

i wouldnt put a cheap MBC on my car...lots of things that could go wrong....but thats just me...

ive done some free mods to my car, including BCS, and cutting the air box, and i put my own Test Pipe on it the other day, runs and sounds great.....but i messed up my tranny :( so i have to get that fixed on friday.....test pipes are pretty easy to put on your self...it costed me about...10$ =) but i had to rent a exhaust cutter for 26$ but i got it back when i returned it....those are all i have done to my car....im yet to run at the track with those done....wonder what ill turn:confused:

I take no responsibility if you screw this up and blow up your car:

Build homemade ball + spring MBC - $8

Remove foglights - free
More air to SMIC

Pull aircan off, discard in trash - free

Port the stock turbine housing - free

Port the stock 02 sensor housing - free

Port the opening of your manifold to match the turbine housing - free

Gut catalytic converter - free

Rewire fuel pump - $10
Use Radio Shack 10ga wire and rip off a relay out of a light kit at Napa - I'm serious

Hack MAS - $10
Take a dremel to the opening of the lower chamber grind until it falls out (make sure to get the suppor braces, be carefull of the stock resistor). Put a 10k resistor in parrallel with the other resistor. Construct a 1" square flapper using a very light spring and junk from a hardware store. Make sure that the flapper will open at WOT and make sure it won't get stuck open. Also make sure that it is sturdy as **** so no part of it will eat your compressor wheel (apoxy everthing).

Now go to the track. Run around 17psi on 104 octane. You will have spent no more than $28 depending on what tools you have around or what you can get your hands on. An idiot could run a 103mph trap on this.

Options:

K&N - $45

BPR7ES Spark Plugs - Who cares?
Beginners gap to .028

Drop exhaust after DP - Free

Remove passenger headlight - Free

Don't anyone disagree with any of this. You are wrong and ignorant.

When you guys say to "port" something... what exactly do you mean?

Hey 99silvermissile, about the spark plugs you mentioned, I just read something about really cold spark plugs never being able to get to the "self cleaning temperature" - How would I know how cold I need my plugs to be?

When removing the silencer from the MAS, how much louder will the car get? Will it be an unbearable noise? Is the noise worth the extra airflow?

Yes. The noise is quite deafening and unbearable. Your engine will sound like an F16 fighter jet.

Actually, no, you won't notice it at all. Removing any useless restriction is worth it.

I'd like to modify my Boost Control Solenoid (BCS) as stated in the Tuning guide. Would anyone happen to have a picture of what that looks like?

Also, do I need to get a certain model K&N filter for my 92 talon turbo?

The BCS is right on top of your air can. It looks like a little cylinder with a nipple on top and out the side with 2 vaccum lines connected to it.
It's not hard to miss.

All you have to do is get a drill bit slightly bigger than the hole in the end. Spin it into the restrictor then pull the restrictor straight out. Takes 2 min and ads about 1.5 psi. A quick 7hp or so. Also be sure to cut the air can at least some. It's easy and helps alot.

i drilled out my BCS and i noticed quite a bit of diff. considering my car is "stock" still, but when i cut the air box i didnt notice that big of a diff, a lil but not too much, i suppose when i get a K&N it will be alot better.

removing the BCS really gives 7hp? thats crazy LOL

I don't know about the BCS mod... in theory it should work. Unfortunatly there is a second restrictor within the BCS that you can't get to without breaking it. Not really a big deal since you would be breaking the nipple that goes back into the aircan. Just break that off, get rid of the restriction and plug the metal nipple on the aircan. I got about 1.5psi extra (verified on an actual gauge) with both restrictors gone whereas I got nothing with only the common restrictor gone.

But you can build an MBC for $8, so what's the point?

i wish i knew how to build an MBC, i need one badly but i dont have $50 to spend on one....if i give you money would you make one for me? or show me how..

Here is the one I desinged:

Okay, seriously. There is one at www.vfaq.com. The one I built is similar. I used all parts from Home Depot. Instead of a ball bearing I used a small round headed screw. This way the spring stays in place better because part of the shaft of the screw goes up into the spring a little. I used a little drop of RTV to keep the screw and the spring nice and secure. The hard part is finding a good spring. I still don't like the one I am using.

hmm, all seems complicated to me.... think ill just go buy a Joe P or Hallman rather than me build one and it mess up my car...

It's really very simple but if you aren't comfortable with it then just buy one. I needed an MBC for the next day (for a trip to the drag strip) and it was around 9pm already so I just threw one together. It worked. Had I not been short on time I would have bought one. Since mine still works I see no reason to buy anything now. Nothing wrong with buying one if you don't want to make one.
