how do you know when you have too much boost?

Chilliwack,
Ok, I know, you can never have too much. :D

but seriously, when do you stop turning it up??

I have a basically stock engine right now, with a K&N, removed the silencer in the can, and installed the MBC.

I have it set for 15psi, and in 3rd it spikes to 17 for a second or 2, and in second it only holds 13. If I set it so that 2nd gear holds 15psi, 3rd will hold too much.

So without getting an EGT guage or a mixture guage, how do I know when it is getting dangerous??

As well, 94 octane is availiable here at the pumps, its like 78 cents a liter, canadian.

i kinda figured 17psi was it, but how do I actually know when it is dangerous?? guages can be wrong, etc. And is spiking to 17 the same as holding at 17? what happens if it spikes to 19?

If I do the fuel pump rewire, how will this affect the car psi wise??

good question I plan on cranking up the boost on my car this weekend. I have similar mods, with the fuel pump rewire. As for psi,are you talking about fuel pressure or boost? All the fuel pump rewire does is allow full voltage to reach the pump under wide open throttle, compared to losing a little voltage under WOT with the stock pump wires. Rewiring the fuel pump shouldn't affect boost or fuel pressure in any way.

Right, you really need some data-logging software, an AFC or DSMLink, EGT gauge and then some balls to turn up the boost. I run 24 on the street and 28 on the strip. I know it sounds like a lot, but the car is tuned to 24PSI on 93 fuel, my o2's are .91, .92 in 3rd and 4th, and my EGTs don’t go over 850 C.

With 118 octane, 28PSI, .79 o2s and 900C the car is like a bullet.

I suggest you get some data-logging equipment, make sure you are not pulling timing, detonating, and don’t have skyrocket EGT's. Be safe and tune your car the right way, and you should have no issue. Also a Fluidyne and FMIC will help lower your EGT's so you can boost more.

I don’t recommend anyone to run his or her car with 24PSI. I have a Frank 4, 720's, HKS 272/272, blah blah...and stock bottom end, but it’s tuned. I watch my EGT's, data-logger and other gauges very carefully when I do race.

My 2 cents worth,

Some dummy from around here thought it would be a good idea to turn the boost up to 20psi on his T-too small. Well, he ran it at the track and "BOOM" no more little turbo. It blew up. OMG

I thought the turbo was efficient only to about 16psi, oh well, as long as you don't blow it up, you're good. ;)

yea I guess I'll leave it be at 16 psi for now. I can't afford a Palm Pilot and PocketLogger software right now. Maybe later.
