Burnt Lifters?

I'm getting ready to pull my cams and replace my lifters with revised 3g's. Everything is nice and clean under the VC, but the 2 intake lifters on cyl #1 are a redish brown color, sort of like burnt oil (at least what I can see of them). All the others are nice clean steel.

I didn't see anything strange when I did a compression check a while back, and the exhaust port on this cylinder looks normal; no discoloration... just some normal carbon buildup like the other cylinders.

Any idea why this would be? I'll try to post some pics when I pull them.

Throw up a picture. Is it rust or just caked on burnt oil?

More like burnt oil... definitely not rust (the cam discoloration is due to camera/lighting artifacts).

You have all the baffles and "oil dispersion" plate things on your valve cover? If so just throw on those 3g lifters and don't worry about it. It doesn't seem like theres anything else that could cause that while it was in the head. It must of been the guy before you pulling them out and getting something on them, but not the others.

Yeah.. that's what I was thinking. I can't fathom why those two lifters are discolored like that, with nothing else showing any signs of a problem.

But the reason I'm concerned... what are the odds of putting two "defective" lifters into the same cylinder on the same side? Seems like quite a coincidence if this is the case, and I wanna make sure there is not something up with that cylinder's valve system that caused it.

What if they forgot to oil those two when they reassembled everything, and they got hot during the first few minutes of running? Would that cause it?

It appears that those 2 are really old, maybe they were ticking or collapsed and the previous owner threw in some old replacements.

Wouldn't surprise me... You wouldn't believe (well maybe the half-arsed/ghetto stuff I've found on this car.

Now that you mention it and I look closer, they don't even seem to be the same kind of lifter WTF
