I was thinking about switching to synthetic on my car... the block has 80,000 on it, and i have heard numerous reccomendations against switching due to the milage on the block. I was wondering the opinions of all of you guys. I basically know all of the major pros and cons already, just looking for some input on people who have done it before with this milage...

thanks!

I personally dont know what the hell people are talking about when they say that the oil is thinner or something and causes more leaks....The weight of the oil never changes. Unless they mean about big chunks of deposites falling off or what not..they shouldnt have been there in the first place. I just changed mine over at 74,000 when i got the car from a lady. Been running it for 5,000 and 2 oil changes later not one leak. I dont know maybe i am lucky. "Knock on Wood".

Well that is reassuring... but i'd like to hear a couple more opinions. The deposits being washed away could be a problem ... i bought mine at 76k from a lady driver... dont know what she ran in it. Anybody else? Should i switch to synthetic?

I've used syn for 2 years. switched at 92,xxx and now have 122,xxx no probs. If you look at all of the 'high mileage' formulations they are synthetic, if my memory serves me right.

I had NONE to LIL leak my 1st few months with the car using regular oil.
Then i switched to Castrol Syntethic and got lots of oil leak..

the bottom of the engine is SOAKED with oil OMG until now i use Syn but leaks out fast!!

help! :dsm:

Things may be different with our motors, but my friend has a Prelude that didn't really consume much oil on regular oil. He switched to synthetic at about 115k miles and it lost so much oil so quickly that he spun a bearing a week after the switchover, the oil level wasn't even showing up on the dipstick! This is mostly his fault for not keeping an eye on his oil level, but the point is that after the switch over to synthetic the engine consumed about 2 quarts of oil in one week. People that use synthetic from the start swear by it though. My personal opinion is that it isn't worth the risk if you have relatively high mileage.
