I have a SBR cast manifold with the external wastegate flange on it.

I'm going to either polish my stock intake manifold, or have it powdercoated to a chrome like finish. I already have a polished valve cover also.

I was wondering if a cast manifold can be powdercoated to a chrome finish, or what can be done to it so that it looks polished.

Yes they do have powder coating that are shiny & chrome like but they are usually only rated to about 1300 F. I have seen some rated to around 1600 or 1700 but they claim they will lose their shine if taken above around 1300 as well. Most of the higher temp rating coatings (2000+) are a mat finish & don't come in the chrome look your after. I have seen a few guy on here that had the chrome like coating on their mani's, so it would be interesting to see what they got & how it is holding up to the heat.

Have you ever popped your hood and looked at your turbo after some hard driving?

LOL..talk about Glowinf red-hot....I would go with a tubular Stainless manifold if you want the "bling" ?

Just put the stock heatshield over it, and trim the spot where the wastegate flange sticks out. This piece alone brings underhood temps WAY down and it amazes me how many people with stock or stock-ish manifolds don't take advantage of it! Not to mention the manifolds rust or even if you coat them look like crap after a month of abuse!!! Just put the heatshield over it, and if you really want you can polish or temp-coat the heatshield. My .02c

I had mine ceramic coated, Obviously it's not been on yet. It is not supposed to keep the nice shiney look. The coating is really only to help it retain the heat.

I would paint it with some VHT 2000 and get a JMFabrications heat shield.

You can Jet-Hot Coat most items. A good friend of mine did his manifold, exhaust housing, and o2 housing all done in it. Looked great.

Heat sheild FTW!!! By the way Steve I love your VR4, I cant wait till this summer when you bring it down to one of our meet's. The ceramic coating looks good. What also looks good is a manifold painted flat black with high temp paint(2000*F), with the JMF polished heat shield. Their heat sheild is only $45 too.

The JM Fab is a nice looking piece but I doubt it keeps underhood temps any lower than the stock piece, something to do with the stock piece being two or three layers leads me to believe that it would function better but I don't have any numbers to quantify though. Maybe someone else with a background in thermal dynamics will pipe in here.

I don't have a background in TD but I know that it is benifical to keep the heat in the exhuast manifold to help with ex. gas velocity. When ex. gases cool they slow down. The stock cover I believe is better since it is shaped to the manifold with a layer of fiberglass between the metal.

You also want to seperate it from the comp. housing so a nice shield shoud go there also.

This is pertinent to the thread at hand, or do you not see the relevance? Should I have started a new thread to answer his question and give him my advice to not powdercoat the manifold to a chrome finish but use a heatshield instead?
