I am in the process of building a new engine. My goal for the car is to do 12's with the stock turbo and without the help of nitrous.

I know i want HKS 264/272 combo, what else do i want/need to get it there.

Anything the wisemen can think of will help. OR if anyone else out there has already gotten this (12's with stock turbo...the 14b that is...and no nos) let me know.

I have put a car in the high 12's.... stock motor, stock everything. There wasnt a single aftermarket part on it. This was with an open exhaust at the track with race gas. In the past I had 2 different talons both running low 13's with the stock exhaust still... and on pump gas... with no perf parts. You should be able to run 12s without spending much at all.

thanks, i guess i should have just put my intentions there in the first place. I want to have the fastest street legal dsm in the world that runs on the 14b and without nitro. I know its a weird dream.........

Well thats alittle different. To have the fastest 14b dsm you might as well shoot for 11's then. So far a few guys are right at the 11sec hurdle. Its all about power to weight ratio! With a well prepared motor, etc you could probably squeeze 300-320whp if all is perfect. Then you do the math and figure out how much your car is going to have to weigh.

Without nitro? You mean without nitromethane? *sigh* And street legal? What is that? Street legal for Il? Do you have emissions? Do you need to have a catalytic converter? Etc. Street legal is a very vague tern. I I have several huge violations of the PA state inspection vehicle code but I still get an inspection sticker placed on my car every year. Does that make my car street legal?

The world is a big place just get fastest out of your head. Unless you really narrow the scope you will never be fastest. For awhile I had the fastest white fwd Talon driven by a redhead in town. That sounds really narrow but it was actually a closely contested race with a friend of mind nipping at my heals the whole time.

The fastest 14b DSM will always be Phil. He has the drive and the knowledge to be able to put that record out of the hands of most people. Find a way to get your car to weigh under 2600lbs with driver and get your tuning PERFECT then you might have a chance. Until then be content with being one of the fastest street legal DSMs running the stock turbo.

How about setting some smaller goals. Like getting your car tuned correctly first. Then try for 13's. Then after that, maybe some low 13's. then after that you can look to 12's.

You can't just go out and "BUY" 12's. You have to tune everything and make it all run together very well.

But good luck on the "Quickest 14B" record. That's gonna be one helluva challenge! :thumb:

I'm sorry, but if you're asking this about how to be the world's fastest 14b owner, then most likely, you won't even get 3/4 the way there. Keep the 13 sec goals there first, then go for the 12's. Doing 12's on the 14b is simple, but breaking the record won't be.

Hell with that...... If 12's are you goal, stick to your guns and shoot for em, at least IF your serious about it. You can't set a goal and then change it. Even though it might take you forever to reach 12's at least you know what you want out of the car. Like Rdrkt said, get that thing under 2600 lbs and you might have a chance, as long as you can drive. Good luck.

Everyone needs to realise the implications of power/weight ratio. For example, if you have a full weight AWD DSM and want to hit 10's... you will need a minimum of 500whp. However throughout the years many guys have run 10's with only 420-450whp. Take a close look at the car and you will see no creature comforts.

Same goes for fastest 14b nonsense. Actually to set an 11.8sec goal with a 14b is rather difficult. And as RdRkt said... you better get your car very light. You can only get so much power from a 14b so you need to use every last HP to the max. Thats where the challenge is.

This is where the street car or race car designation comes in. The 500whp 10sec dsm can be very much a "street" car... however the 320hp 11.8sec 14b car will have to be much more a pure race car. Make sense???

HighPsi91 made a valid point but mine is this, but a 5.7 liter 350 stroke it to a 383 and SC it , then put your 14b hair dryer in the trunk so you will have the fastest 14b in the world, hey its in the car and moving at the same speed so why not?

I believe that you have FWD car, right? As a rule of thumb, FWD cars with street tires are roughly 1 sec slower in the ¼ mile. So bare that in mind when you start setting goals.

A year and a half ago, we took my friend’s ’92 GSX and installed:

BR 2.5” exhaust $280
2.5” test pipe $50
Fuel Pump $200
Boost gauge $55
Gauge pod $20
K&N filter $40
Ported all exhaust components $150

+ all the “free mods”.

Total Mods: $795 and fuel pump was optional (we could have gotten away with just re-wiring it)

The car ran 12.7 with around 20-21 psi of boost.

That is a mighty big talk…

Used to be quickest 14b @ 12.05 :(
But still fastest 14b @ 113.8mph :)

I have a 90 talon awd tsi that runs a stock 14B setup. It has the K&N filter with hacked can and hacked MAS. The fuel pump is from a 3000GT with stock Fuel rail and injectors...(for all I know). Nothing on the intake looks modified, ported...trimmed..etc. etc. Turbo looks stock along with IC and all for and aft piping... The turbo does have a 3" pressbent downpipe welded to the bolt on flange with no cat and 3" all the way back to some nasty "dumptruck sounding" APEXi 3" muffler. Alot of people say that something has to be modified to get 17.5lbs of boost from that turbo....spring...or something..I have no clue there, but it does get 17.5lbs, just not in 1st gear. I'd like to know if you have any clue as to how much power this thing makes, and with a fairly gutted interior..how quick this thing should be ( we only have 1/8 mile, but 1/4 ET guestimate would be cool, could give a shite less about MPH, with a brand new 2600 clutch setup. It runs on 93 pump gas all the time. I'm working on getting all the goodies, but would like to know why, other than my ability to shift almost anything extremely fast (no brag b.s.) this car spanks our cities modified turbo hondas, modified RX7's, WRX's and all of them. And i have to wait almost a full second to shift from 1st to 2nd gear because of synchros......those are getting redone also. Thanks for any help there. I'll be asking for your advice on getting this thing in the rough same place ET wise as your own very soon. Thanks/Steve

You don't need a built engine or cams. There are people running mid 12's (on race gas) with just K&N filter, exhaust and MBC. Nothing else. Driving has a lot to do with it.. ;)

With the 14b the cams will hurt performance. The 14b starts to run out of steam at about 6k rpm, so the shift points should be lower, like maybe 5800rpm. The cams work best at high rpm. Typically a built car with street cams will shift at about 7200 or so, depending on the setup.

Yeah really... thats pretty damn funny:thumb:

It does not have a MBC on it. There is a switch in the center console that used to activate both settings for the electronically controlled dual stage boost controller. It is not in the vehicle anymore. I've sat a few people in the car that have turbo cars and they say that the turbo seems to keep making power as the rpm's go up so they say the turbo is good for more than it's currently making. It will not make full boost until the motor is at or above 3500rpm. Somebody said something about a spring in the wastegate that allows the turbo to just keep spooling until the cams run out of steam...supposedly...either way, that's the way i bought the car. No boost controller on it. Not needed if i can regulate how LOW of boost i get by the gas pedal. I'm not interested in setting the thing for like a cheesy boost level for around town and higher for the track. Apparently it is set wide ass open and it's regulated by keeping the pedal from the metal. Thanks/Steve

Steve,

So the answer is NO, you do not have an adjustable boost controller...

My guess is that your boost is set at stock 9psi and it creeps up at higher RPMs.

Get a boost controller! It does not matter if it is manual or electroninc (personally I prefere manual, but that is me).

My next question is this.....i have an electronically controlled unit that is a dual stage boost controller via an electronic solenoid. It has two rotating valves at the top of it...it also has some wires coming out of it.."obviously". The dude that i bought it and some other items from sent with it a floppy disk that supposedly had instructions for installation....it was all DOS junk that i could not use...do you have any hook-up and wiring instructions?
