Can I run Mobil 15W50 in the winter?

I wouldn't run it during winter. Even just sitting overnight it is going to get pretty thick and when you start up everyday it's gonna take a little while to get flowing. run 10w40. You will also register some crazy high oil pressure's running that wieght on startup.

Considering that 15W-50 Mobil 1 is as thick as 10W-30 conventional, yes you can. Before I tried a lighter oil to solve some oil pressure issues, I planned on running it all winter. My machine shop also recommended it for year round use.

what supports this? i thought the weight was standard, synthetic or not. Or is it because our cars run the oil hotter then most so we thin it out even more?

You have to remember that when the oil is cold it is at the lower viscosity. 15W50 is basically a 15w oil that will not thin out more than a 50w oil when hot.

The difference between 10 and 15 is not very much. But test have proven that 0w oils do reduce start up damage. But any "0w" oil is just less than 5w oil because the standard only goes down to 5w.
