But there is a catch or two.

I will stay with the 14B turbo that I have on my 1991 Talon. Yeah, I know there are some really macho blowers out there, but the 14B spools up well, I don't need add on fuel controllers or injectors or any of that, and there is little lag and usable boost by about 3300 rpm.

In fact, the only mods I have are:
- full 2 1/2 exhaust, including downpipe, cat, all piping from the cat back.
- K&N FIPK intake system
- Lower honeycombs removed
- silencers removed
- boost set at 15 psi.

Is there anything else out there that is proved to make some power? Remember, no add on fuel computers or piggyback systems.
- The boost controller. I am not sure if I have a ball/spring type. If I had one the engine should boost faster since the wastegate remains closed longer. (I have the Extreme Technologies brand. if that helps)
- Intake from MAS to the turbo inlet. Is there a pipe that flows better than the plastic tube? Is there a proven HP gain?
- intercooler pipes. Will they show gains on a near stock engine?

Fire away! Comments welcome!

Kyle

i would hold off on an upper i/c pipe, i bought my hks i/c when i had the same mods and i didn't notice a significant gain and my et's or mph didn't change, i would get a fuel pump and rewire, my warlboro is a little noisy, i would recommend a supra pump

loki, thanks for the feedback and comments.

I am not sure about upgrading pumps - doesn't that require an upgrade to injectors/fuel computer etc? Its not a direction I want to go.

I am running about 15 psi now. Am I linited to boost because of the pump situation?

I figure I am close to being maxed out in terms of fuel flow - thats ok. I just want to see if I can get a little more without the injectors/computer. If my turbo goes, can I use a 16G with lower boost levels?

Kyle

Kyle, you are approaching it the same way I am. Stock turbo, injectors, computer, and engine.

I havent done it yet, but there are some things I would suggest over and above what you have done.

www.Dejontool.com makes a lower and upper intercooler pipe, as well as a modified stock intercooler. Also they make a replacement for the turbo outlet and the throttle body elbow. The intercooler flows more, soaks less, and has bigger, straigther pipes on it, the elbow and outlet also are bigger and straighter. These give ~3psi less pressure drop, and lower temps at the throttle body. Also they flow more cfm of air. Maybe just an upper ic pipe by itself wont do much for ya, but the pipes, ic and elbows sure will. Especially the throttle body elbow. Take yours off and have a look at it. Jeez, thats ugly small in there. I ported mine(the inside curve was HORRIBLE).

I would love to get the whole setup, but it will be nearly $1000 bucks after tax, shipping/handling, duty and exchange so I will have to wait.

Maybe they are full of scata, but even if it half as good as what they say, it should be worth it. Once you have the exaust, and the boost, you need to feed the monster!!

anyone have any experience with this??

Upgrade your downpipe to a 3inch O2 eliminator.

yep, missed that when I read his post earlier, sorry :)

that will help.

also, each time you do a mod, especially a big one, like the downpipe, you should turn down your boost, as it can rise dramatically when the engine breaths more easily. You can put it back up once you have it sorted out.

Geez, $1000 for the intake system upgrade - thats a lot for an uncertain gain in power.

Yeah, Bohrn, I see the throttle body elbow. Ugly, isn't it I'm sure the airflow isn't too impressed by it either. Looks easy enough to weld a flange to a mandrel piece of tubing, right? Or just get a littel more creative, get the loca pipe bender to make the upper intercooler pipe. The place that did my exhaust, he might charge $40. That sounds like an experiment that needs to be done. I wonder about the power - lets take a guess at 10 total, after the whole works is added.

I wasn't aware of the intercooler either. I am looking for a used one that I can mess with (use the same core, but change inlet and outlet).

Thanks for the info - this should keep my mind out of trouble for a week or two!

Kyle, go to their website. I don't think it is an uncertain gain at all, I believe it will really help with a modded engine. The pressure drops are like 4psi!! And temp drops are better as well. Flows are also up in CFM.

and it is not $1 grand US, but one grand Canadian, with all the added expenses I have. It will probalby run you about $600 all told, but that is for EVERYTHING from the turbo casting to the throttle plate. And its all better than stock, some are way better.

On a side note, I have gotten my hommade MBC probs nailed down now. It sits at 15 psi almost all the time. It dies a bit (1-2psi) up top over 6200rpm, and there is a small spike (1-2psi) at around 4500 in 3rd and 4th gears. It is only momentary(less than 1 sec)

what a difference!! best $14.53 canadian I have ever spent!! :D

I suggest:

3inch all the way back.
IC pipes(I would say FMIC but with only a 14b it may not really be benificial)
Upgraded TB Elbow
Dejon tool hard intake pipe.
Stock fuel pump rewire
